P1186

I pulled this code with a scanner after a check engine light appeared
Code
P1186
Make
INFINITI
Description
Engine Oil Temperature Circuit Performance

I thought an easy fix for this would be an oil temperature sensor replacement. I have a 2004 with an automatic transmission. The oil temperature sensor part number 22630d was used through August of 2004.. My car was manufactured in June of 2004. There's a plug in the oil pan where the sensor shows on the schematic. There's also another picture that does not show the oil temperature sensor. I don't know if one is for an automatic and one is for a manual transmission. I don't understand where the code would come from without the sensor unless they built it into the ECM picking up oil temperature somewhere else that I'm unaware of. I cleared the code and I haven't seen it recently. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated

Are you SURE it's P1186 and not P1168 ?

I will double check the scanner today when I'm over there. Fairly certain we had an 1186 and a 1286.

Reason I ask is that's not a valid DTC for the G35. But if it's P1168 that's your bank2 sensor1 O2 sensor.

P1148 is the bank1 sensor1 O2 sensor.

I don't believe the oil pressure throws a CEL, it throws the separate oil light.

I am thinking you are correct.

Two schematics. One shows the oil temperature sensor. One does not. my car does not have an oil temperature sensor at least not in position shown on the schematic. That leads me to believe that one is for an automatic transmission and the one that shows the oil temperature sensor is a manual. The other code was a1286 which makes sense because of the jerkey throttle. 1186 is an Infiniti code but I don't believe it's valid for this car. Or not valid for this car with an automatic transmission. I looked yesterday and the codes did not get stored. At this point all I can do is wait for it to throw a code again. A narrow band O2 sensor would be a lot easier to deal with.. it was late and there's a good chance that we transposed numbers when we wrote it down in the book. Thank you for the reply. I'll be certain to post if it throws another code. I'm getting the plenum gasket kit today and putting a set of valve cover gaskets and plugs in it. Next week it's on to wheel bearings struts and suspension parts. It's a 2004 with 137000 miles on it. It's a lot of fun to drive and I look forward to it being a lot more fun once I get it straightened out.

Here's a link to the factory service manuals, section EC Engine Controls can help sort things out in the future (index has listing of all diagnostic trouble codes for engine function), I don't recommend using non-specific searches for diagnostic trouble codes like that because what one manufacturer uses for their code isn't ALWAYS what Nissan uses.

Normal use of the FSM you will start at the FWD Forward document.

Thanks

It was/is an infinity code. Not the car in question. The ervice manual link is invaluable. Thank you so much. Knowledge is power.
