Poor Man's .10 Pop Charger!!
Here it is.... Taking out my K&N and getting ready to install the new JWT POP and it something says...."What if I take off the "Power Duct", but leave the stock paper filter in place?"
I secured the paper filter with 2 large zip-ties and holy crap it's un-freakin beleivable. Exhaust sounds great and intake sound is purrrrfect. I pissed off a couple neighbors, but a few guys came out just to see what the "new" sound was. It took all of about 10-minutes to do and is litterally a .10 mod. I'm seriously considering not installing the POP and using the money for some grounding wires:D - I will post pics later.....I'm going out for another drive:p |
Somebody please lock this thread before the Power Duct War resumes.
BTW, why did it cost you $0.10 to remove the power duct? Did the zip ties cost you a nickel each? Why did you feel the need to zip tie the filter in? |
post pics please...and does this work for the coupe too?

The same volume can be had by adding a z-tube and removing the Power Duct cover and over radiator snorkel. The sound is deafening. I find the driveability suffers and the underhood intake temps and very slow speed are very high (using a datalogger). |
The temps are cooler here (65-ish) so I did not have any issues with engine temps, but I'm looking to see if I can modify the JWT heat sheild or make something like it. Sound is awesome at WOT and very mild for normal driving so I'm not sure what you mean by "deafening". I can still break the tires loose in first and they chirp in 2nd. From other cars I've heard it sounds about like the Stillen CAI.
I have a pic, but it is large to post here. If someone has the ability to resize, post your e-mail and I'll send you the image.. |

After 20+ mile drive to work at highway speeds sound from inside the car is same as with stock set-up. Exhaust has more growl and car wakes up when you throttle down. A guy in a Coupe pulled up a rolled down his window so he must have noticed something. I did notice the temp gauge was a tad higher than normal and outside temp was 62. I can only imagine that things would not be good on a hot day stuck in a traffic jam. I’m putting more investigation into the heat shield.
Here is a pic - |
lol im sorry but that looks so ghetto! im happy with just removing the power duct :)
|
i dont think the power duct will prevent heat from getting in ...maybe 1-5 degrees IF even that. But i do think water ingestion is a much larger problem with your setup. nothing covers up the filter and your not using filter oil like the JWT pop charger. Water does not mix w/ oil hence why they put oil on the filter. w/o oil on your filter...water will easily penetrate the dry paper filter and go straight thru into the manifold..
|
Um oil on the fiters is NOT for water prevention. It's to help catch dust particles.
|
I use to do the same thing back in the days with my old honda civic wth a drop in K&N. It sounded great at WOT and you can hear the intake "hissing" noise when getting on it. Seem to breath a little better up top too. The only thing I notice was the the filter does get dirty faster.
Like G35m@ said, it's a great poormans mod. Personally, I think it's more for sound and maybe a slight bump on performance on certain parts of the powerband. |
WOW....I cant believe you posted pics of that. I wouldnt be opening my hood at any meets. Sorry, but if your gonna do it, just do it right. You cant be that poor, if you own a $35k+ car.

well said. keep your hood locked... like cut the release wire so you aren't even tempted lol |
one weekends worth of bar tabs would pay for the intake...
