I'm thinking about going with a custom exhaust

I don't know which exhaust to choose, I know a shop that does mandrel bend exhaust, but I don't know what specs or canisters to ask for, they are a high quality reputable shop, I like the fast intensions exhaust but it takes a while to recieve, has anyone slese went the custom route?

savefatkids recently got a custom true dual exhaust. jdm_g35 has (had?) one, too.

Hey there -

RE: Fast Intentions exhaust - when you say it takes a while to recieve...what is a while to you? Have you called Tony at the shop to see what the real timeframe would be if you ordered?

Typically, we quote 10 days to ship from order time, as each system is hand built to order, and that is mainly because they need to make sure there is time to cover other projects and customer orders as well. It doesn't mean they can't do it faster.

Give Tony a call..

i would not go with a custom exhaust, but thats just me. These companys research and make sure you are getting a good power gain.

Another thing to remember - if you don't explicitly know what different components to use and why, and the exhaust shop does not have extensive experience with doing systems on these cars, you will end up with a massively droning mess for your first exhaust system.

Whether you choose the Fast Intentions or not - check out the Stillen and HKS as well. These are the top 3 duals out there - and there is a huge sale going on for the Fast Intentions in the marketplace as well.

Just make sure you listen to these systems, if you can, before buying.

10 days is not long

Yeah 10 days is not long at all, I thought I saw someone quote 5 weeks, yea I agree that the companies have r&d to make proven power, but wouldn't be cheaper to copy certain exhaust? Wouldn't that be a high-quality knock off? (Oxymoron ?) for instance, I like the xo2 but I can trust the shops quality over the xo2, not that the xo2 isn't good quality; its just that the xo2's quality isn't yet proven to me

Good points - the issues really come down to service and fit/finish of the products as well. Making a system a copy of another, may be easy as fa as looks go, but your not likely going to get the same components in place, and therefore not the same performance or sounds, etc. For instance - the mufflers on the FI system - are custom designed by FI and made for them...you can't just buy those mufflers. You can buy similar looking ones, but not those, so your results will not be the same.

Just food for thought.

Yeah, that would probably be the case with the FI and the customs mufflers, I remember along time ago that the Greddy "style" exhaust that were recreated had basically the same sound and canister w/o the Greddy stamp...

If u go with mandrel bend route it is going to end up costing almost the same than any other aftermarket exhaust. I personally would never pay for an aftermarket exhaust. I have had a true dual custom exhaust on my car since i first got the car and it still puts a smile on my face throughout the RPM range.

My suggestion is to look at the most popular exhaust systems (beside the HKS) and go to the shop and tell the to make the exhaust that looks like the aftermarket ones out there. As far as muffler goes u can't go wrong with magnaflow.

Why not the HKS?( looks cool as hell), i'm wondering which exhaust to model after....

i still got it, tru dual all the way back, makes the most power, no drone :)

If u look at the design u will know why. In order for a exhaust shop to develope a custom resonator like the hks has right above the tailpipe they have to call an engineer to design a costum fitting resonator thats is why.

Custom exhaust.....

The most unique exhaust on driver has been Firedawg63nla (Lawrence) with
the crossover/Magnaflow mufflers and quad tips. Try a search and see what
you think of his system. If you wish to duplicate his system and want the
Magnaflow mufflers call Chris @ 949-858-5900. I'd PM Lawrence first to
find out exactly what he has in his system! This maybe a hassle when it
would be sooo easy to just order a dual system from Stillen or HKS!

Check out rjcustompiping.com

Another reason I was looking into the custom is that if anything goes wrong, I can drive right up to the shop.

That's not a resonator on the HKS - it's called a dead chamber...
