Customs exhaust vs cat back system
Should i get custom exhaust from this guy who is known for good work, or just order a full new cat back system??

I would just order a system. Good work, is one thing, having the knowledge to look at the oem system, find it's flaws and eleminate them with a new setup is totally something else. Most people doing custom work will just toss some compression bends together without thought with a shiny muffler and call it good. Don't fall for that. I did go with a custom system myself, but I did a ton of research before hand and I built it myself in my garage. I simply did not trust anyone to hit the details are hard as I demanded. Only thing the shop did was weld it together. I think a custom coupe system would be more difficult do to the orientation of it's mufflers, IMO.

A manufactured system would have a lot more R&D dedicated to it's design. Unless the custom builder was some sort of exhaust guru and has appeared on Rides or something I'd go with the manufactured system because the result would be more predictable. In reality though the hp difference between the two would probably be neglible.

Well, if Rides has featured you as a guru exhaust builder, I'd be willing to bet that you were pretty good at it.

i agree with Gsedan35, many custom shops out there just throw on a nice can and weld some pipes together. Much R&D is needed to properly build an exhaust that is suitable for a specific car. The characteristics of the engine and length of the car must be seriously taken in to consideration. Too much or too little backpressure will result in fluctuations in the balance of torque and horsepower. even the angles of the bends, and amount of bends from the cat to the can are important to keep that balance. Also be aware of some companies that claim huge hp gains from their exhaust systems...i've seen claims of 20hp gains...in most cases true...after a forced induction kit or heavy engine tuning (which is obviously not stated). but on a stock to lightly modded naturally aspirated engine, pretty much impossible.

I had a fabricated system built by a muffler shop in town over a year ago now. I built it trying to copy the Borla system. Borla had just announced the 350Z system, and the "G" system was not yet out. My system has 2.25" pipe, 2 Blue Streak Resonators and a Magnaflow Cross Flow Muffler. As with the Borla, I put in an "H" prior to the resonators. The sound it makes is quite mellow, but it really screams at WOT. I've always felt the system was well designed, I've never put it on a dyno, but I felt a little something in the seat of my pants. It really opened up when I put Crawford Cats on it.
