All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
I came across this on the Z forum:
"The 350Z is somewhat similar to the Z32 N/A. Lots of technology and well engineneered mechanics of the engine and the way it breathes leave little room for modification. I would say the 350Z is like the Z32 N/A X 10. I mean as far as tuneing ability. Of course you can mod it all you want but your not going to gain much and as in the cases listed above your going to lose power. Looks like forced induction and Nitrous are about the only way to go for performance mods. Just wait for the forced induction 350Z to come out." http://zcar.com/forums/read.php?f=5&i=82780&t=82780 So basically in a nutshell, all these intakes (injen, K&N, Stillen, etc) and all these exhaust (greddy, B&B, blah blah) are really just making additional noise which makes the driver think he/she is going faster. An interesting way of looking at the situation is.....if a Nissan engineer couldn't make the engine produce more, what makes you think that these aftermarket products can? Nissan was very disappointed that this engine could not produce 300 hp total (probably for marketing purposes). They came close with 287 (z) and 280 (g). So basically this particular engine is all "maxed" out and any rinky dinky intake or exhaust you add is going to show minimal gain, if not make you lose HP. Dyno results may show you gain 5 hp at higher rpm's, but you lose 15 hp at lower rpm's. Is that worth it? I'm thinking the only mods that can really make a difference would be forced induction and nitrous like the quote states. Cars with big V6's that only produce little hp, I feel the intake and exhaust, etc etc could make a difference, but with this particular engine..... you're going to show minimal gains...if not losses....thoughts? comments? concerns? kkh713x G35c 5AT/Ivory Pearl/Willow/20's/Htown https://g35driver.com/rides/detailri...x=18&vehId=393 |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
Definately these mods would make more noise, but that's part of the reason why cars don't come out of the factory with stuff like this already on them.
Manufacturers won't add this stuff to their cars because the majority of their target consumers will not want these parts. For example, with aftermarket exhausts you have to sacrifice quiteness for increased flow. It wouldn't make sense for Nissan to release a luxury car whose exhaust note would be significantly audible inside the cockpit even with the windows closed. Most aftermarket exhausts have this effect. It could be considered a turn-off to a potential buyer. Someone already posted that after installing the NISMO Weldina exhaust on their coupe they were not happy with the increased noise. I'm not saying the latest aftermarket offerings for the G35 are worth getting, I wouldn't know. But I happen to agree with you that adding an air filter and exhaust will yield minimal gains if any. But some of the brands you mentioned have do reputations to be quality tuners in Japan with quality parts that do yield gains. Greddy aka Trust, and HKS come to mind. This is in general of course and I'm not talking about their G35 specific applications. ----------------------- G35-Forum.com |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
I'm right with you...If you want to change sound, put in a CAI and exhaust. If you want to add performance go forced induction. I keep boring everyone with what I did to my SHO but...I put in a ported intake, CAI, high flow Ypipe, ported secondaries, UDP's, and an LPM. I estimate I got 20-25 Hp (only because I didnt do a baseline). The end result was:
The car had a different personality...It really screamed at the top end, sounded awesome but I lost some low end torque which I never stopped missing. I was expecting a snap your head back, holy [censored]! change but that wasn't the case at all. I spent almost $2k doing it and it was a complete waste IMO. I returned it to stock and sold all the parts for $900 6 months later. I liked getting my low end back. In talking with some of my mechanic buddies you dont really start to get that seat of the pants kick unless you add more than 50hp. ie forced induction. If I ever do mods to my G it will only be a super or turbocharger. G35s 6MT Garnet Fire, Premium, Aero, Aero Body Kit, Winter Sport |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
Then only way to find out is to do back to back dyno's
I can tell you one thing though.... manufacuturers claims are always on the high side. I can almost garuntee you wont see 14-16 from an injen intake. You will have to show me back to back dynos to prove to me otherwise, same time, same temp, same dyno, it just wont happen. Dan O http://web.eaton.com/eaton/3/images/...eader_Logo.gif |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
Especially with the way our intakes are already set up. It's the closest thing to a stock CAI that I've ever seen.

Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
If you go with a supercharger or turbo, then all those other parts help even more. But without significant changes like that, bolt-on parts aren't going to provide much of a boost on an engine that's this fine-tuned from the factory.
Yes, the factory engineers do have other considerations.. noise levels, EPA fuel economy requirements, smog, etc. that aftermarket tuners can forget about to squeeze a little more performance out of. But look under the hood.. take a good look at the stock intake.. it's already a CAI system, it's sucking air from the front grill. There's not much left to squeeze out of this engine and keep it naturally aspirated. 2003.5 G35 Sedan Desert Platinum/Graphite Premium/Sport/Aero/Nav/Winter |

I chipped my Passat turbo and added 50+/- HP as well as tons of torque. The car was transformed. On a cool day you could chirp the front tires, even with Tiptronic and traction control. The added bonus of the turbo was no change in gas consumption and it zeroed the smog checks. Dan |

Oops. sorry for the redundant posting.

Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
going to a custom TRUE dual exhaust would almost be guarnteed to pick up power. I would take cutting another opeing in the rear bumper, and going to a custom exhaust shop that'll do whatever you want.

Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
I with ALL of you guys on this one. I want to see independant dynos before I'd buy any of these except the K&N drop in filter which I already have. I don't know about HP, but my gas mileage has gone up 1-2MPG.
Exhaust systems are famous for cutting backpressure which kills you on the low end. Plus, I find it hard to believe you could improve on the sound in the coupe. I want power below 100MPH, where I do all of my driving. (Well, almost) :-) |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
I'd like to see a dual exhaust, but I'd want it to use two variable-capacity mufflers, similar to the stock muffler on the sedan now, to prevent the drop in backpressure and torque at lower rpm's.

Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
Yeah the intake is one of the best stock ones for the G35/350z. The Maxima/I30 wasn't as good as this. One thing that might be improved upon is the exhaust. This might not apply, but the y-pipe for the Max was very restrictive, and an aftermarket one gave 10-15 hp (for just a $300-400 y-pipe)
They came out with headers also for the Z, so if they get noticable gains, it will help the G35 out also. 2001 I30t (Next: G35) |
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
So will Y-pipes do anything to the G35 sedan?
|
Re: All these Mod's just Additional Noise??!?!
It's possible; There's only one way to find out.

ryoken,
i couldn't agree with you more on our car's intake. i have been saying that since i bought it in november and everyone was talking about the ingen CAI. well now everyone that was speeking so highly of the after market CAI's have problems with it stalling! |
