catalytic converter problems :(

Ok so my check engine light turned on my 2007 g35x and sure enough I need to replace my cat converter. And I was wondering if its an easy change like if its a diy project or if I really need to take it into the shop. And how much it would cost for a non California emissions converter. And how many I need because I know some cars take up to 4 converters

Where do you live? I know you are asking about non Cali cats, but if you live here no one will ship you any. If you did miraculously get someone to ship you some cats, you will only be able to get the Cali spec set. Thats the price we pay for fun in the sun I guess

There are some outfits online that sell replacement cats for our cars. Has anyone tried these here in CA? I would probably avoid the dealer for this kind of work and start at a good local muffler shop. Maybe consider something from a reputable 3rd party muffler guy like Walker? I'm curious to know how this turns out because I have heard of people paying over 2k to get a Cat replaced on other models/brands of cars. I know that during CA emissions testing, they crawl around under your car to make sure they are in place and have not been modified.

^^^this is not entirely true. I have NEVER had anyone under my car checking for cats, but they have a lot of sensors that check various emission levels....sniffers and such. The visual tests are usually in the engine bay. With that said, 99% of the sites I have looked for cats and even flex pipes, will not ship to Cali. The state is so damn strict on that stuff like that its like trying to ship alcohol to Utah....ain't happening! And if by sheer luck you manage to get something shipped, most shops wont install it because the shop could get busted and be fined or loose their license if caught. Its a little nuts
