What does it sound like when your HFC's let go?

My car started making a small noise towards the front end recently, and I had guessed was a small exhaust leak by the sounds of it. Well, driving home last night getting on the freeway all of a sudden the car just sounds awful now. Like an old Toyota Carolla or something. I have Fast Intentions HFC's that I purchased used so they probably have close to 70-80k miles on them now. I think I remember hearing that these will eventually fail. Could that be what's causing my car to sound awful all of a sudden?

Update:

Took it to the shop, and they said that one of the welds on the cats broke. They are going to re-weld it for me.
