Sick of your dirty gray floor mats? DIY floor mat mod $3.99

Heres what I did.

1. Stick the floor mats in the washing machine, get them nice and clean.
2. Fill a big tub with enough hot water to completely submerge the floor mats.
3. Pour in the dye of your choice, I used about 2/3 bottle of RIT dye from Jo Anne fabrics (http://www.ritdye.com/)
4. Stick floor mats in the tub. The instructions on the bottle say to keep stirring whatever you're dyeing for 30-60 mins. I put some gloves on and agitated them for about 15 mins then left them to soak for another 45mins or so.
5. I hand washed them with detergent and hosed them off till the water ran clear then stuck them back in the washer just for the spin dry cycle.

I'd imagine you could dye them any color, as long as you start with a lighter colored mat, I Dyed my cell phone cover blue. Saved myself a couple hundred bucks doing it myself instead of buying new black floor mats. I still have to do the back mat.

Looks better in person. The whole dash is black along with the center console and some of the door panels, it fits in nicely.

DrewTheSuit 09-25-2009 08:16 PM

got the same dye at home, just haven't had the time to do it...i also noticed it said not to dye rubber backed materials so i am glad to hear that yours came out ok...i just shampooed my mats the other day so hopefully MOnday i will join the $4 black floor mat club:biggthumpup:, helluva lot cheaper than buying new mats, i hate the stone carpet

idrive_MD 09-26-2009 09:44 PM

i saw a thread on honda-tech that used this method, the op also did his entire molded carpet using a large trashcan, the results looked very good. I wouldnt mind doing it one day, I hate the grey carpet.

TroysG 09-27-2009 09:46 PM

That's just the way it ended up, the middle of the fuji didn't really take the dye.

DrewTheSuit 09-28-2009 05:11 PM

got my back mats soaking in some rit right now, the fronts needed to be cleaned more before they went in the dye so i'll save those for another day:JAMIN:...just wish i had the time to gut the interior and do the whole carpet

jin22gt 10-01-2009 12:58 PM

so its okay to put the floor mat in the washer?

They came out fine in my washer, a little bit of fraying on one of them but I cut that off and they're all good, that may have already been there I'm not sure.

Run it on a gentle cycle and they'll be fine.

it works best if your washer doesn't have the agitator in the middle

DrewTheSuit 10-01-2009 06:42 PM

i didn't put mine in the washer, just got some carpet cleaner soaked em real good, scrubbed the bad spots and hosed them down, if you have a pressure washer close by then i'd go that route if you don't want them in the washer

Duriisimo 10-01-2009 07:37 PM

Did it stain ur bath tub?

Big Rob 10-01-2009 07:42 PM

^He didn't dye the mats in his bathtub. He used a plastic tub.

05_Silver_G35 10-14-2009 09:47 AM

How did you keep the infiniti logo from getting dyed?

Read the whole thread dude, he already said that the mt. fuji logo just didn't suck in the dye. Probably because it's embroidered.

Looks good, man. If I had ugly tan mats like you, I'd do it to.

Has anyone done this on Charcoal interior?

BloodlineG 10-14-2009 11:49 AM

haha some early readers probably have black tubs :P

4DGS 10-14-2009 11:57 AM

Their wives/moms are probably incredibly pissed!

This is some serious dye, I'd use a garbage can.

DrewTheSuit 10-14-2009 08:29 PM

i used a big plastic bin and it rinsed right out, weird cause the dye says it will stain plastic

steve85 01-29-2011 06:58 PM

Just an update, my dyed mats are holding up amazing.
They still look new after a good vacuuming.

DrewTheSuit 01-29-2011 09:27 PM

+1, did my mats in october '09 and still look amazing...just waiting for the weather to warm up so i can finish doing the whole carpet

Heckrat 01-31-2011 11:11 AM

That looks really nice, might have to try that myself. Good job man! Thanks for sharing.

tibasnatch 02-06-2011 10:50 PM

yea looks good and cheap.....has anyone done all their carpets? would it be hard to remove all the carpets? are they glued down?

g35ES 02-24-2011 04:02 PM

i bought the black dye but my mats turned out blue did that happen to anyone else???

steve85 03-04-2011 02:44 PM

if they turned out blue the dye probably didn't take all the way.
Wash them really well to get any oil off them then stick them in the dye again, let them soak a bit longer next time.

steve85 03-09-2011 09:20 PM

Did you ever treat them with a stain repelling spray?
I've done a couple sets and never had that problem.

^^^^^^^^^^^^ here my friend is your problem.....

VincenzG35 05-13-2011 04:57 PM

Just did this letting them dry will post pics

VincenzG35 05-13-2011 08:16 PM

Ok so my mats are almost done not ready to go back in the car though. Mine came exactly like the ones above I used a bottle and a 1/2 of Rit which I bought at walmart for $1.66 took an hour and a half they look OEM and couldn't be happier ps i did not use salt just really hot water let them sit for an hour then dry for 10 minutes next i used the wash soap then let the water run clear apparently i didnt do it good because when i touch them my hands turn a tiny bit black so ill let them dry until tomorrow if i have the same issue ill throw them in the wash without soap and dry them again but for 5dollars total for all supplies they look amazing

infinitig35_6mt 05-29-2011 11:02 PM

cand find this stuff in ontario canada i have tried walmart and some other stores they used to sell it but they said they stoped. i guess ill have to go to the craft store
