Paddle Shifter Wiring

I've been reading a DIY from infinitiscene over and over. but have two things I can't understand.
I'm a newb and I shouldn't have tried it but went ahead and did it. but seems like it failed.

This is how he made his relays to handle up and down shift.
everything is straight forward except wires that needs to be ground and two wires connect to the paddles.

What I did was to wire up shift paddle to the red spot of the 1st relay then the other to the left prong of the relay then grounded it. same for the down shift.

So except two wires from each shifter, I think everything else was hooked up correctly since I can shift using the shifter. I just can't figure out what to do with the rest of wires from paddles.

Help!
