DIY's for replacing low beam and clearance strip bulbs
 

I've done some searching and found a good DIY on changing the fog light bulbs. I just got my Ultinon 6000K's and want to do my low beams too. Actually I want to replace my clearance strip bulb with an amber one as well.

So my questions are:

1. Is there a separate DIY to replace the low beam bulbs, or can I use the fog light replacment procedure to get to them?

2. Is there a DIY to replace the clearance strip bulbs?

Well I decided to dive right in this morning and I can report the following:

All three sets of bulbs (fogs/highs, lows, clearance strips) can be easily accessed by removing that frond fender protector as specified in the other DIY's. It was really easy and intuitive...just a bit time consuming. It was much easier to get to all the plastic clips in the wheel well by jacking up the car first.


I've now got Ultinon 6000K's, PIAA Xtreme White 4700K's, and amber clearance bulbs.

So I finally decided to get some photos of my new lights to show you guys. Go to this link and check them out:

I really like the way they look but there are a few minor things that kind of irk me about them.

1. It looks like my Ultinon beams are not identical. They're close but the left beam seems to ever so slightly taper down a bit whereas the right does not.

2. When the PIAA XtremeForce highs are projected onto a wall, I can see that the right beam is slightly higher than the left.

So I wonder ... how do I fix the disparity? I can't align the headlamp housing since it appears that the individual bulbs are out of alignment. I figured I could pull off the wheel well again and re-seat them, but there's really not much to that so I'm not sure if would help. Or do I have to learn to live with them?

Again, overall they still look great. I'm just pretty anal when it comes to my G.

I just want to replace my clearance strip bulb. How do I do that?

It's really easy. Once you pull off the fender/wheel lining (as specified in the foglight DIY on this forum), you'll see a wire running up to a plastic socket up near the clearance bulb area. To change the bulb, you just grab the whole plastic socket and twist it counter-clockwise. It will turn about 90 degrees and slide right out. The bulb just pulls straight out. To reinstall just push the socket back into the hole and turn clockwise until it locks into position.

I have to take the whole fender off tho?

I don't know if you have to take it all the way off. I've heard of some other G35'ers who just unclipped it, bent it and pushed out of the way so they could reach in and access the lamp housings. I suppose you could do it either way, but you need to get past that fender/well guard.

Yeah, the protector does extend under the fender a bit. So you're right - don't remove the fender - that would be bad. But yes, remove the protector that sits in the wheel well and extends just under the fender.

Are there any DIY's out there?

I used this DIY along with the OEM service manual to remove the wheel well protector:

Although the DIY was written for fogs, you can change all of your lights (lows, fogs, clearance, turn signals, etc) once in there. Swapping the bulbs is easy, you just have to get in. Let me know if you need the factory service manual removal procedures and I'll post them.
