Clock Light Replacement - Guide

So my clock lights went out... I didnt know they were actual bulbs and not LEDs. Anyway the dealership took a look at it and charged me like $50 to tell me the bulbs were out. They were nice enough to offer to replace the bulbs for....$90!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I told them I could do it myself, how much for the bulb and socket? $15.95... for 2? NO FOR ONE BULB AND SOCKET.

So i bought one to make sure it was the bulbs out and decided to do a little DIY myself on replacing the second bulb.

Here is what you will need to do to replace it for $1.99

1. Remove the plastic dash around the clock. You need to pull it directly toward the seats NOT UP towards the windshield.

2. Unplug the car alarm LED

3. The clock is held in by 2 screws, unscrew them.

4. Unplug the wire connecting the clock

5. There are two grey or black circle sockets, take a screw driver and just twist them half a turn and they should come out.

6. There is a yellow...sock....over the bulb, gently take it off.

7. On the underside of the socket you need to take something like a needle and unwind the wire from around ther bottom of the socket.

8. Straighten out wires and pull the "grain of wheat" bulb out.

9. Go to fry's and get a "grain of wheat" bulb 12v or 14v, strip the wires to match the bulb you took out, and basically instert the new bulb in, put the little yellow sock thing back on it. Twist the wire around the socket like it was orginally on, and plug it back in.

I hope this helps anyone before they try and have the dealer do it or pay $15 for a single bulb.

Thanks much. By "grain of wheat" bulb, I'm not sure what you mean? What's the model type? Worst case, I'll pull it apart and take the failed bulb(s) to an electronics store...

Thanks,
Brian

Nice! mine went out not long ago, i needed to do this. like what shdowflare said, can you tell us the model # of the bulb? brand? part #? pictures?

thanks!

hey sorry for the late reply. the bulb is literally called "grain of wheat" bulb number 495. If you go into fry's or an other electronics store, just say i need a grain of wheat bulb and they should have one.

See it is a long skinny bulb that you put the yellow plasitc "sock" over.

yeah that ebay auction is the same bulb, it will work if you strip the wires to the length of the burnt out one.

shdowflare 08-05-2007 10:27 AM

And I suppose one bulb is all I need? I noticed there were two in your pic.

Thanks

There are acutally 2 bulbs in the clock... 1 illuminating each side of the clock.

shdowflare 08-05-2007 06:49 PM

Thanks for the info. I will look for a 2-pack then...
