what makes some non OEM HID set up's blinding

I have an extra set of Infiniti OEM ballasts, wires and HID bulbs from when I converted my factory G lights from halogens.

I want to consider retrofitting them on my classic Mustang but I want to be sure I know what not to do first - I don't want to annoy the rest of the world with my headlights.

thanks

should be fun :) other suggestions / ideas welcome. It has Silverstar H4's in now. I know the lights aren't adjusted correctly and I think that was high beam. The housings I have now are pretty much like these. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/65-78...spagenameZWDVW

The reflector design that is made for halogen output when combined with an HID setup is what causes the glare. Also the misalignment of the position of the HID capsule location compared to a halogen filament also leads to an improperly distributed light pattern. To properly retrofit into those headlights, you should do a projector retrofit using a set of OEM projectors from a factory equipped HID car. Some good choices that look like they would fit in those housing would be TSX, E55, FX, E46 projectors. What you should use will depend on whether you need the main headlights to function as both low beams and high beams(bixenon) or just as low beams with a seperate high beam

I can do with just low beam with these but I guess sticking HID bulbs in those halogen housings would create that stupid brightness then huh ?

I considered doing something like this for projectors http://forums.stangnet.com/showthread.php?t=612779

but I'm not sure if I really want the little circle projectors in the headlights of this car.

could projectors be made to fit in the lower valence holes or is that too low and close together to be worth anything ??

hummmm or would they fit in the holes next to the headlights ?? might be cool if I relocated the turn signals down to the lower holes ??

what is a good priced / quality projector ? S2000's pretty expensive ? would want to color mod them etc...

you can do what the guy did in his Datsun

pretty sweet job there

the chrome trim around the projectors looks like the little pans underneath my kitchen stove burners lol

so buying something like this is all I need ? My OEM ballasts and bulbs would work with this ?? Are they all the same I saw a set of Daewoo projectors for like $15 :icon30:

You need a set of Bi-xenons because you still want high beam function

look into TL, E55, Murano, G35, FX any of them would work. TSX is single xenon only.

my OEM HID bulbs wouldn't work for high beam correct ?

I wont drive the car much so I don't really think I'd need high beams. So w/o high beams can I use any of those type projectors with my OEM bulbs and ballasts ? Projectors are probably brighter than the Fords high beams now anyway

I don't guess the diamond pattern of the headlight housing would cause any glare problems with the projectors comming through it ??

Bixenons work by moving the shield out of the way of the lowbeam HID bulb. It only uses 1 bulb so it would work for high beams if you have a bixenon projector

There is only 1 type of xenon bulb, as well as ballasts. Your OEM stuff will work fine with a set of bixenon projectors such as TL,g35,fx,e46 bix,e55 etc

gotcha thanks :) modding two cars has me trying to make the most of the parts I already have.

any difference or preference in one being better than the other ?? or a better price typically ?

IvoryGT Apr 4, 2008 03:34 PM

I think having the G35 projector is plenty, you should be able to find a pair for relatively cheap. Either that or FX, they are practically the same. If not you can always find E55s, they come standard on most European cars, its not the best overall, but has great high beams.

68_GT Apr 4, 2008 03:42 PM

what type of HID bulb does the sedan come with ???

liking these because they are so compact it seems like it would be easy to retrofit - but it says they require a D2S bulb. Don't really want to get into buying new HID bulbs if I can avoid it.

redlude97 Apr 4, 2008 03:53 PM

TL projectors are not that compact compared to some of the other bixenon projectors out there, but if they will fit for you then they will work. Your OEM bulbs are likely d2r, but they can be converted to d2s relatively easily. Not a good as a d2s bulb, but will still work okay

68_GT Apr 4, 2008 04:30 PM

if I put projectors in the lower two holes of the front bumper would they provide good light output on low and high beam that close to the ground ?

just curious in case I buy some then decide not to put them in the headlight housings

which units are the most compact in size ? Seems most selling these know people retrofit them into different applications.
