Ambient LED Install Pictures!

5 Attachment(s)
I recently posted asking for ideas about how to wire my foot well lights. I didn't get an answer, so made a simple circuit with a relay and installed them. I also installed one LED to shine down on the cup holder/shifter (like BMW has). The LED's turn on when my headlights do. Here are my results!

The footwell LEDs are sweet!! I dunno if I'd personally want mine that bright while driving...but
How hard was the install?

Thanks! The cup holder light shines over the center console as well. The footwell lights are not that bright as you think. They look bright due to the exposure setting of my camera. If I just used my Iphone, the light would not be seen.

The install was very easy. I took a relay and spliced into the cigarette lighter for 12v and ground. Then the positive wire of the lamp that illuminates "P,R,N,D" was used to trigger the relay. I chose that because I wanted the LEDs to turn on with my headlights. Next I took some 12v pre-wired 5050 smd LEDs and wired them in parallel to the relay. The whole circuit fits comfortably under the gear shifter. Surprisingly, there is a lot of extra space in there.

Then for the shifter/cup holder light, I peeled back the lining around the sunroof just enough to fit my hands in. I unplugged the power connector to the map lights. Next, I took a 12v pre-wired amber 3mm LED, drilled a hole in the plastic, and then fed it through the hole. The leads on the LED were then spliced directly into the connector. There is no physical switch to turn this LED off. Our cars have a built-in safety switch for leaving lights on by accident. The time is 30 minutes. That one tiny LED will be on 30 mins after I exit the car. The current draw of that 3mm LED is minuscule, so it wont effect my battery.
