How's this for a headlight mod..

As some of you may kno I've been toying around with powder coating plastics.. Came up on an extra projector housing so I got to experimenting..

it's a custom satin matte black with a semi texture that's meant to mimic a Teflon coating.. The coating glimmers in the sun at different angels sorta like this

Gonna go with some led's next and I'm custom modding my projector lens housings with something crazy.. Moar pics to come

i would have painted the chrome though on the projector.

zeroscythe Feb 25, 2011 11:29 PM

^the homie said the same thing n lemme tell u with this finish it'd look amazing but I like the way the chrome gives the appearance of an eye ball.. Just wait till u see what I'm doing with the lens housing n I'll all make sense lol

Dustin@StrafeAutomotive Feb 25, 2011 11:31 PM

yessssssss moarrrrr...

someone should do the "gunmetal" look like on the CTR headlights for the 99-00 civic

Didn't think you could powdercoat plastic due to nonconductivity? Please explain some more. Very interesting.

Dustin@StrafeAutomotive Feb 26, 2011 12:03 AM

^i thought the same thing.. but it can be done! :)

19kdrill Feb 26, 2011 12:18 AM

I would definitely be interested in some moar details!

I know the oven used is around 400+ degrees. How does this not melt plastic into a ball?

zeroscythe Feb 26, 2011 12:59 AM

^not all finishes start curing at the same temperature.. It's just a question of
finding the right finish n the right temperature to cure the powder n not damage the plastic.. Trust me, Dustin knows, I went through my fair share of f*ck ups before
I realized what can be powder coated n what can't lol

Nice, in for more pics.

Ooooooooooo looks pretty slick! In for the details!

Isn't durability the benefit of powdercoating? Since these bad boys are secure behind the lens, what is the purpose of the powedercoat? Is the finish not available in paint?

Dustin@StrafeAutomotive Feb 26, 2011 02:45 AM

the finish comes out better than paint IMO. cleanest job ive seen on lenses

Exactly textured finishes like this aren't available in paint.. As soon as u see it in person u immediately kno why it's not possible with liquid, it's a really nice look
