What i'v been up to over the winter...
 

New mods! :biggthumpup: Picked up soundmike's 20" Rennen C10s, and an eibach pro kit. Love the way it sits. Nice and conservative for me. Still trying to figure out a wheel vibration though.. had the fronts balanced, hub rings in, wheels not bent, everything seems to be fine, but the wheel vibrates. Gets worse on some roads, seems to be fine, then if I get on it on the on ramp for instance, it shakes worse and worse. I have no idea what it could be. Feels a little jiggly at times to..

It looks great on the blue slate, J! Although, I'm really concerned about the vibrations you're experiencing, but can't think of anything else that might be causing it. :icon43:

And this after you've had it rebalanced, right? I'll send you PP to help cover for that when i get home.

Edit: p.s. Did you try roadforce balancing? Typically with vibrations at freeway speeds, it's a balance issue. So RF balancing should be able to fix it.

but yeah as mike said if you only started to have vibrations after swapping your wheels and the wheels are in good structural condition(chkd for bents etc as u said) then it could be in need of better rebalancing(road force) which should not cost more as most shops offer free rebalancing for the lifetime of the tire or maybe wrong size/damaged hub rings BTW the car looks GREAT with those wheels!

make sure your lug nuts are tight. happend to me once when my friend forgot to tighted 4 of them on my front left wheel :banghead: and it sounded like what your talking about.

I only had the two fronts 'normal balanced' so i'll get all four road balanced as soon as Im home again. Unfortunately, I got tired of the shakes, so I threw my sport 18s back on this morning before I hit the road back to school. No shakes, nothing, smooth as butter, so its something on the wheels. I'll be home again next weekend, but im riding with my roommate in his G so i'll try to get the wheels over and have them roadforce balanced. Im also taking my car into the firestone this week and having it all aligned. My friend swears that could be causing the shakes to since it happened on his volkswagen when he switched from 16s to 18s. Why not try that to. lol I just need to get this thing rolling smoothly. I cant really go over 70-75mph with these wheels and have to drive to Zdayz in May. If I can't get these things rolling smoothly, I may be going to Zdayz on my 18s :( and that wouldn't be as fun to run the dragon on my crap all seasons. :(

Must say though, the car definitely feels more spirited on the 18s than 20s.. thats a big wheel on there. :bowrofl:
Everything was all torqued down. Made sure of it.
I'll try and get a photoshoot done before I go to Florida. I need to get a couple things ordered and added so we will see.

Regarding the vibration. I sold tires for 8+ years and in my experience when a vibration gets worse and worse as the speeds get higher is ussually a slipped belt in the tire (or possibly a very bent wheel, which you've already ruled out). A balance issue is typically only noticed at a specific speed and is caused by a resonance that only happens at that speed/rpm... so you might be perfectly smooth up to 65 or 70 mph and then you get a vibration at 70 - 75 mph and it starts to go away at 80+ mph.

Incidentally, I had to replace a Falken tire on my G a while back due to a slipped belt. I hit a major pothole going 85 and thought I bent the wheel, but after multiple trips to the tire shop it was discovered that it was a bad tire (found out because it eventually got bad enough I could actually see it with the naked eye).

I'd hope it wasn't a slipped belt. The tires themselves have maybe 50 miles on them... and the vibrations seem to come and go, thats what makes me think its a balance issue.

I hope so too, but don't rule it out just because the tires are new. I can't tell you how many times I had to replace a brand new tire on a customer's car because of a bad tire. The next time you have the tires balanced ask them if you can watch while they balance them (some shops are ok with this, but most aren't). If so, the you should be able to see if there is a slipped belt when then are spinning the tire... just look for a slight wobbling (or side-to-side motion) of the circumferential grooves.. this is the easiest way to identify a slipped belt in the tires tread. If it is a slipped belyt in the sidewall you should be able to see this without spinning the tire.

Also, do you know if any of the wheels required excessive weight to balance (you can probably look inside all of them and see the weights they added)? If so, the other thing you can try is have them pop the bead on that tire/wheel and rotate is 180° and then reair and rebalance. If both the tire and wheel have a slight heavy spot and these are lined up when mounting this can cause that tire/wheel to need excess weight to balance, rotating the tire can sometime cure this.

Imo find a shop that does road force balancing, they spin it up to 65mph and apply load to the tire. Never will go back to normal balancing. Find a shop that has that machine its worth it.
