BRAINTREE — The market for stolen auto parts appears to be booming, as evidenced by the theft of a chrome tailpipe off a car parked at a movie theater. A witness told police that he saw two men working under an Infiniti parked in the lot at AMC Theater on Grandview Road on Friday night. When the men stood up, they were carrying a tailpipe and a battery-powered Sawzall, the man told police. Randolph police stopped the men along with three others in a Volkwagen Jetta on Lavally Road and found a freshly cut tailpipe in the trunk. John M. Dacey, 21, Justin T. Dacey, 18, and John B. Steward, 17, all of Randolph, Justin J. Simas, 20, of Fall River and Ryan J. Cosman, 20, of Marion were each charged with larceny over $250, malicious damage to personal property, possession of burglary tools and conspiracy. Police across the South Shore have reported an increase in parts being ripped, sawed or hacked off vehicles. Catalytic converters were hacked off vehicles in a commuter parking lot in Plymouth earlier this month. Police say thieves steal the parts and sell them for scrap metal. |
