Ticket!. but it's not my car?

Has anyone had this happen? How did you resolve it besides going down to DMV and standing for hours with pictures of your car and registration information?

I got a citation in the mail stating a red Dodge 2dr got an Oakland housing Authority ticket. It had my G's license plate???? All I can think that happened is my front plate got lost when I had the work done for my rear ender. Maybe someone in that shop somehow got a hold of the extra plate?

How do I make sure my DMV record is not ruined?
I'm foreseeing hours at the DMV getting new plates or having to document with pictures etc.
Bah Humbug.

+1

Best of luck getting this resolved, Gillian.

Wish I had some advice for you, but much like you predicted, I don't see an easy solution to this, either. :o

Gillian - I'm really sorry to hear that you're in this situation. My advice would be to first call up the DMV and see what they say - I've found that it definitely saves me time & hassle by calling ahead of time (be it to set up an appointment, get necessary info, whatever the case may be).

They might be able to look up your account over the phone and see: "oh, duh, you drive a G not a Dodge - sorry about the mixup. We're sending you new plates/registration" or something along those lines?

Whatever happens, good luck!

just get personalized plates that say, something like "sxy red" or "im a MYLF" (you'd have to use an Y for YOU instead of I, because well... you get it.)

my comment was worth negative pennies but i have no other suggestions. :)

:bowrofl: priceless!

Thanks everyone. I was hoping there was a quick fix.
Unfortunately if the DMV is involved, you just block off the day and go sit. What a pita.

I forgot about the appointments, thanks Nate!

+1 for mylf....good luck.

WTF?? Sep 12, 2008 12:24 AM

The DMV shouldnt be involved in this case since they were not the one who issued the citation. Gillian would have to deal directly with the city courthouse for Trafficing issues. Bring them the citation you received and bring your registration that shows your VIN and license plate number. They will ensure the VIN will match up to your plate (of course it would since you have the actual registration). They may need a copy to confirm with DMV on the VIN to see what type of vehicle it is. Once they clear that, then they should drop the charges.

If that fails, just contest the ticket and bring your documents for the judge to see. Yes, definitely a waste of time, but that how the system should work.

Since you're missing your 2nd license plate, you can also print off a request form for new/replacement plates off of the DMV website. There is a small charge around $12-25 dollars so you can avoid future similiar situations. Once you receive your new replacement plates, itll differ from your Vehicle Title, but DMV says it wouldnt matter because they will go by the VIN for any vehicle search.

Good luck Gillian

I got a parking ticket in LA and I live in Sacramento. I had to fax the City of LA (LAPD/Courts) proof that I was in Sacramento when the ticket happned. They cleared me for a few reasons, the first being that the car they mentioned was a red Hyundai Sonata, I sent them my registration that showed the plate number was issued to a 2006 Grey BMW 325i. To prove I wasn't there I sent them a paystub from my company (covering the date of the ticket) proving that I am based and was in Sacramento. They cleared me of the ticket within about 2 weeks of me faxing them the registration and paystub.

My only question that never got answered was why couldnt they look up the plate and realize that it belonged to a BMW and not a Hyundai? They have to have access to DMV records.

Contact the agency that issued the ticket, You will probably have to do something similar to what I did.

I'm willing to bet that it's just more work they'd rather not do

BTW, new plates with reg sticker are $25 as long as your car is already registered... and if the line at the DMV near you is too long, you might be able to find a DMV with shorter lines just outside your area...

GreenGoblin Sep 12, 2008 08:26 AM

wow that sucks to hear, I am sure that they are gonna want to issue some new plates.

Grace Sep 12, 2008 09:25 AM

Thanks Mike and PSX. I'm going to try to get it fixed by phone today.
Faxing stuff would be so much better than trying to find the time to go somewhere and stand in line.

I also think it's time for personalized plates.
(..and NO! I'm not putting mylf! I already get into enough trouble.) :bowrofl: :o
