Importing

I know about the 25 year rule, but has anyone tried importing their 350gt from Japan into the States? Thank you for any help.

No, it won't clear customs without the necessary paperwork.

Great question — the 25-year rule is actually your friend here if you're looking at the right cars.

The JDM 350GT V35 shares the same platform as our G35. The earliest V35 coupes came out in 2001, meaning those are now 25 years old and eligible under the NHTSA 25-year exemption from Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. Cars 21+ years old also clear the EPA exemption, so a 2001 JDM V35 clears both hurdles.

What you actually need at customs:
- Japanese title / shakken documents
- NHTSA form HS-7 declaring the 25-year exemption
- EPA form 3520-1 declaring the 21-year exemption
- CBP entry paperwork through your customs broker

Once it clears the port, most states will issue a clean title without much trouble.

The previous reply is a bit misleading — it absolutely CAN clear customs with the right paperwork. Plenty of people have brought in JDM V35s this way.

I run Axis Imports (just introduced myself in the New Members section) — a US-based sourcing and import service. We handle the full chain: Japanese auction sourcing, physical inspection before purchase, ocean freight, customs clearance, all the EPA/DOT compliance paperwork, and clean title delivery to your door. Flat $1,750 service fee, no percentage markups or hidden costs.

If you're seriously eyeing a JDM 350GT, feel free to ask here or check out axis-imports.polsia.app — there's a landed cost calculator so you can see the full numbers before committing to anything.
