Starting Issues

Hey guys.. My G has 170k miles and it starts great on a cold start, but it doesn't wont to crank on the first turn after ive driven it for 20 minutes. I have to literally crank it 3 times every single time before it starts back up again. Why is it doing this?

Does it crank at normal speed/power both cold and hot?

If it's not cranking while hot it's usually the starter going out (starter solenoid to be exact).

If it cranks normal speed but just won't START while hot that's usually a fuel delivery, cam/crank sensor, spark plug, or EVAP problem.

Its not cranking while hot.. I figured that this would be the case pertaining to the starter, but i wanted to double check and make sure before i remove and replace the starter tomorrow... Thanks!!

Yep probably the starter, it's a pain to try to bench test and reproduce the issue too because by the time you get the starter off and over to the test bench it's usually cooled down enough that it's working again.

If you have 100k or so miles on it just replace the thing as preventative maintenance even if it doesn't fix the problem (but it's likely the problem).

I've had very limited success using a heat gun on the test bench to make the starter hot to simulate actual conditions but it's tricky, you need a second set of hands almost and the use of an infrared temp gun to be accurate and not damage anything from overheating it.

I replaced mine with the Denso (I think) OEM one from rock auto and it has been great. Car sounds awesome starting up. Cost $90 shipped or so. Two bolts to get it off.

I also had warm start issues.

When tested after the fact the solenoid was toast when hot.
