Maybe the Simplest Non-Nav Solution?

So I have the Bose Sound System in my 2008 G35x, but unfortunately I do not have navigation.

Instead of placing a stock or aftermarket navigation system, thanks to InfinitJazz, I decided to go about doing what he has done with his HTC Incredible...outputting his audio and video to the in-dash stock LCD monitor. Up course, all touch operations are commanded through the phone itself, but in my opinion, NOTHING beats Google Maps Navigation and having YouTube, Internet browsing, Pandora, and etc all on your in-dash LCD monitor.

So my question is...has anyone else been able to accomplish this? Like...do you have or know of any phones that have a 3.5mm to RCA or MicroUSB to RCA cable to output video AND work? I do not have his phone, so the cable that he is using will not work with my Samsung Galaxy S II Skyrocket.

My phone is one of the newer phones that require an MHL to HDMI adapter and I am not willing to purchase an HDMI to RCA converter box in addition and provide power to facilitate this connection.

Thanks in advance. :thewave:

I've had this thought as well, but my htc thunderbolt doesn't have any video out capabilities. The incredible has rca video out, not sure what other phones do cause most of the newer ones are hdmi out.

Alternative might be buying a small (4.3") aftermarket nav unit and try to fit it behind the ashtray door somehow. That way it would be hidden from view with the ashtray door closed, but always in the car.

Check out the youtube video in my thread (https://g35driver.com/forums/v36-aud...-location.html)

I've referenced this in the thread, but you will only be able to accomplish this if your device specifically has Video-Out capabilities. Otherwise, you are out of luck. Unless of course, you make the investment in purchasing a HDMI to RCA converter as you mentioned.

So, you can imagine my disappointment when I upgraded to my HTC Rezound and finding out that it did not have Video-Out capabilities.

Remember, this capability is only possible if and ONLY IF your device has video-out capabilities. Another phone i know that has this capability is the DroidX.

HTC Rezound does have hdmi out via an mhl adapter.

Right. I should have specified that it does not have a TV-Out via RCA.
I would have to purchase an HDMI module in order to make the HTC Rezound work in the car as opposed to HTC Incredible being a plug and play.

I think there is a new HTC verizon phone coming out that does this. I forget the name but I believe it is the replacement for the thunderbolt.

You can also do this with an iPhone. Just jailbreak it and add the tv out apps. The maps program sucks but you can just buy the Garmin app or something similar.

Otherwise I don't think there are many phones that can do RCA out, just certain HTC models and the iPhone.

I just got the Droid Razor Maxx and it has HDMI port. Do you guys think this can be a plug and play like the Incredible if i just buy a mini HDMI to rca connector? Or will I need a box?

surfjax87 05-13-2012 04:57 PM

You will need a box. HDMI is digital and rca is analog.

Mlopez 05-15-2012 12:37 AM

OK ..I also have a VCI-NIS2 I use for my backup camera. Can I just hook up a mini hdmi to rca to the RCA on the VCI-NIS2??

RemmyZero 05-17-2012 03:17 PM

yeah, any phone with HDMI out can be converted to RCA, however, the units are generally expensive if i recall. you can run that into the center console or the VCI-NIS2 if you have it.

I have an iPhone (garbage, hate it) and i've used the video out before on it, although i agree that google maps is waaaaaaaaaaaaaay better on an android. as for me though i just use my garmin carputer through my VCI-NIS2, still a great option to me although admittedly i wish i could use google maps for traffic updates.

You realize to have this work while the car is moving you will also have to do a certain modification (that cannot be talked about on this site)....right?
