Anyone experience increased wheel vibration from stock to 19's?

Hey guys - Just wondering if you guys have experienced increased vibration from stock to 19's.

Recently, I have gone from stock 17's to M45's.

Ive had my tires balanced twice already and yet, I still feel vibration; on the highway that is. Say around 125-135km/h (75-80 mph roughly for US folks). Normal city driving is a non issue.

Im not sure if its:

a) the dude balancing my car sucks at balancing

b) Bigger rims with summer tires will equate to increased vibration at high speeds

c) some G drivers here notice that their passenger seat vibrates.. (possibly resulting in increased vibration of the car?)

d) all of the above.

Also, how are tires balanced anyway? Is there a certain speed in which the tires are spun to make sure they are balanced properly? If that is the case, are there varying speeds in which they are tested and balanced at?

Any insight would be great.

Thanks.

I've got the coupe 19's with FK452's and have no vibration in the steering wheel. I would say the first culprit is the balancing.

Maybe take it elsewhere? Did the first place have a Hunter machine?

Wes_888 May 18, 2009 09:34 PM

I was thinking I might have to take it elsewhere.. just to make sure its not the balancing. I was thinking that perhaps it might be the rims.. although, the rims look good. No obvious dings or anywhere to suggest it got damaged. Only 3000 miles was driven on them prior to me.

Thanks for your input as well. It helps to know since you share the same tires as i do.

Sucky part is I have to pay another place to do it.. since the other place will have to redo it for me for free. But they seem incompetent (if its not the rims that is).

I dont know what machine they use.

Hunter machine is the best?

Make sure they do a Road Force Balance.
I have no vibes with my 19's

im hearing all these new terms I have never heard of before! haha

but this is good! Im gonna look up these new terms that you guys are saying.

Ditto on Road Force. It simulates the tire rotating with a load, so it balances better.

it's also possible that your wheels might be bent, or out of round... Balancing a tire/wheel combo and only compensate for so much...

soundmike - thanks =)

svlrx - thats what im hoping isnt the issue. Although visually, the rim looks perfect. No reason to believe they are bent outta shape or something.

Welcome :)

One other possibility is the tire itself being defective. I've had that issue once before (IIRC it was on an HTR+), Discount Tire finally figured it out after they test-swapped the tire out and it balanced perfectly.

i had the same problem you had when i put my G37 19s on. my problem was, i had gotten factory wheel locks with the wheels, and the stupid dealer didn't put the locks on the opposite side of the valve stem when they re-calibrated my TPMS sensors. so if you have wheel locks, make sure they are screwed in on the stem that is exactly on the opposite side of the air pressure stem.

Same issue here Wes...put on the 19s...severe wheel vibration after 60km+..brought it back to get re-balanced...slighty better now, only feel the vibration after 110km+...but still dont know what to do:dunno:

I was under the impression that it was the retards at the Tirecraft I went to. So im thinking of bringing the car elsewhere to have it looked at or just wait until my next appointment at the dealership so they can have a look

+1 on the vibrating passenger seat as well..during highway driving alone in the car it shakes like hell

suby01 May 19, 2009 03:21 PM

there should be no wheel vibration. i went from 17s to 19s and depends on who does it then its fine.

SVLRx May 19, 2009 11:56 PM

I have a wheels vibrate, and they told me the wheel wasnt perfect, not that it was bent in an oval like usually happens on bad roads/potholes, but actually not perfectly round. Showed me the wheel vibrating on the balancing machine... Luckily i got another wheel sent to me....

interesting.. I will keep that in mind. I didnt think that would play a role in wheel vibration.

Yikes... good luck Eug. Hopefully you figure it out as well :S

I phoned the tire place that I had my tires installed/balanced. Currently, they are using a "standard" wheel balancing machine. They didnt tell me what it was. BUT, the guy said they are getting a new wheel balancer with "road force distribution" 1-2 weeks from now. So I will go back when they their new machine and get it rebalanced again for the 3rd time.. :S
