Steering rack Q's
 

Tell me if this sounds like a steering rack problems: When i hit bumps going at high speeds and hit bridge connectors on highways, my steering wheel goes nuts as in lots of shaking from the bump yet the car still goes strait when the wheel is doing all this crazy movement from the bump. As well as vibrations from 60 and up with some shuddering when i turn my wheel to make turns at 40 and up

When you guys hit bumps doing 70 and hit those rough bridge connectors..does your wheel go crazy for a second? Or do you just feel the bump? It's almost like i lose control yet the car is still in a strait line even when the wheel isn't


I know this is an expensive thing to fix in these cars so i hope it's not the issue..well i actually hope it is so i can get it fixed ASAP. How hard is it to tell if a rack is bad?

Interesting as I tried to fix this issue this weekend.

This is typically due to low strength tie rod ends and sway bar connections.

I double checked my suspension this weekend as I was adding more anti squeal lube to my front pads, and everything looked fine.

What I did find out was that my power steering fuild was on the low side. I added just a bit of fluid, and I must say that I notice a sizable improvement from the shaking that you describe and that I was getting. (Silly I know, I would not believe this if I had not done it myself.)

It did not go away completely but it did help quite a bit.

You should check your power steering fluid.

I only thought of this as someone was complaining how their steering was getting really stiff, they did a flush and it solved their problem.

Man, it sounds like your are really trying to find this, shake, shimmy, whatever,, all i can suggest is, ( and u may have already checked) is to get car up,, and with suspension loaded, and unloaded,, grab, and pull, and tug, on EVERYTHING!! and of course, that the actual steering rack is well bolted in, and everything is tight,,, GL man!!!!

Turn your steering wheel left and right and see if you hear any clunking sounds and if you do it might be the rack and pinion brushing.
