I think I didn't intall my rotors properly
So, I was able to install my rotors this past weekend, however they don't feel right...
When I apply my brakes from various speeds the steering wheel shakes violently....additionally, it sounds like my wheel is unbalanced now. I'm planning on removing my wheels this afternoon and inspecting my 'handywork' I did not lubricate the metal to metal contact on the brake pads to the brackets...I did not ensure the hub was rust/burr free before I put on the rotors, and I did not re-grease my caliper pins. I plan on reviewing/addressing those things...are there any other tips you guys might have? I may just put the old rotors on (they're still good) to see if it's just warped rotors... |
Make sure that your lugs arent lose . i would take off all the tires and remount them. make sure the wheel is seated on the hub and torque them down.

Thanks KC...I think one of my bolts got cross threaded on the lug nut...is the tap tool for that pretty readily available? I plan on going to my local Auto Zone to ask them for advice, but you guys are waaaay better.

Are you sure you didn't put one of your rear Sport wheels on the front of your car? They will not sit properly!!

I decided to swap to my winter set of wheels (which are clearly labelled left front, left rear, etc.)
I took everything apart again, cleaned the hub, re-greased metal to metal contact points and caliper pins and tightened everything back down. It definitely helped...I think I didn't tighten down everything sufficiently before. I have a torque wrench, but I don't think it's working properly... |
make sure you follow the bedding procedure, its very important
|
I'd recommend bedding the brakes as well.

Is there any way to 'retro-bed' the brakes? I've had them on for about 2 weeks now, and the problem still exists. The brakes shake pretty badly when applied. Can I clean them off and re-bed them?
|
UPDATE: I ended up putting the factory rotors back onto the front of my car in the winter because I couldn't handle the judder...took the 'bad' rotors to a machine shop to get them cut and they sat in the trunk.....until a couple of weeks ago....I put the cut slotted/dimpled rotors on while I was swapping my winter wheel setup to my summer wheel setup and things are MUCH better. I'm a little disappointed in in brakeperformance, that I got a shoddy set of front rotors and had to go through the extra effort and expense just to get them work right.
