Driver's side cv axle bolts
 

Has anyone ever had to remove the 6 bolts holding the driver's side cv axle to the transfer case? How and what tools did you use to get them out?

bump back to the top! I too am wondering this. I just noticed that the inner boot on my driver side axle is ripped, so I will end up replacing the entire axle eventually.

6 point closed end wrench and a hammer usually.

Put the wrench on and hammer the opposite end of the wrench to loosen the bolt.

I haven't looked at the clearance on the G35, on ones that are really tight you have to use a flare crows foot to get them torqued properly. Always torque with a crows foot set 90° to the wrench or you end up multiplying the torque due to the leveraging effect of the crow foot being an inch away from the center of the calibrated axis.

If there is room then a swivel and socket to torque the 30-35 ft/lbs.

It's easy if you have a good impact gun and extensions. If you loosen the boot clamp and take the axle completely out. 10mm socket zip them right out.

You can keep it from spinning by sticking a screwdriver into the fins of the brake rotor and jamming the screwdriver up against the brake caliper.

Obviously you would need to have those parts installed, I recommend temporarily putting them back on if you already disassembled it otherwise there's no way to keep that CV axle from spinning. If you're not sure what I'm talking about I can snap a pic for you tomorrow I have my car up on stands with the wheels off ATM.

The rubber boot needs to be pulled back.

Taking them off if you're not saving the axle just pull the boot and you can reach them with extensions. Putting back on I found that if I removed the splash shield under the car, you can reach where the axle mates up, from there it was simply a matter of turning the axle to each set of bolts to tighten them down. I tried quite few diff. combos of extensions, extension hex sockets nothing seemed to work until I did what I described.
