anybody running 235/45-18 (F) and 255/40-18 (R) on the stock sport 18's

I'm looking for some other tire options besides the stock replacements and using these sizes opens up my options alot.

They're a slightly smaller diameter than the original setup, but seem to be within the allowable area for upsize/downsizing.

Any opinions? Anybody run them?

(stock is 225/50-18 (F), 245/45-18 (R) btw)

I run 235/50/18 in front and 255/45/18 rear with no problems

This is what I'm looking at doing.

In Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD-3 tires.

255/40r18

yeah i have 255/40r18s in the rear looks pretty cool,a little wider.the only downfall is that you have to turn your vdc/trac contrl off when punching it because its a little lower profile tire.so it thinks the wheel is spinning due to the faster revoloution.

I ran 255/40/18 Michelin PS2s all around on my X. They were on my 8.5/18 by 42mm PIAAs.
They looked good, and I never had any issues with vdc. They were almost 3/4" smaller diameter and my speedo was out. I went back to 245/45/18 all around since the taller tire looked a bit better without a drop, and my speedo was accurate again.

Here is a pic of 255/40/18 on my 8.5" wide rims all around.

Thats because you have the same size tire all the way around if you just had them in the rear or just in the front then youll hit the trac contrl.in my case im offsetting the size of my rear tires to the front tires.thats why the ecu is thinking that the rear tires are spinning because of the offset. If i was to compensate by putting tires that will match the rear tires then i or anybody else wont have that issue!

That doesn't make any sense though.

I'm not totally sure how the VDC recognizes slip, but a small change in diameter (3%) shouldn't make a difference at all.

Does that mean if someone changes the gears in the rear end, the VDC will kick in all the time as well?

Maybe your tires are just spinning and you don't know it. :dunno:

Lower profile tires= worse traction.

Im not talking about the vdc is causing it,the trac cntrl, your trac cntrl is on the same switch as your as your vdc,so you turn your vdc off you turn your trac cntrl off.the stock 245/45 is 26.7 in di and the 255/40 is 25.9 trust me it makes a difference thats 4mm on both ends of the tire, ask any tire rep!

silverG2007 Nov 11, 2007 01:24 PM

I know there's a diameter difference, I just don't understand how that'll make the traction control kick in.

Either way, if it screws stuff up, you're probably better off with 235/50 F and 255/45 R tires.

Anyone know about Toyo Proxes T1R tires vs. Goodyear GSD3?

I've read some decent reviews on the Proxes, and they're about $40 cheaper per tire.

a tire store strongly suggested not running 255's on the stock 8 1/2' rims.

I had GSD3's on my VW R32. They were great for about 5,000 miles. After that, they feathered, buckled, you name it. After 10,000 miles, they were so out-of-round that it felt like my car was on a BSR machine.
