synthetic oil?

I know this topic has been beaten to death but i just wanted to get yalls thoughts. I been running Mobil 1 since i bought my g35s,( i only put 10k so far) but ive been hearing a lotta **** bout it. What do yall think is the best syn oil to run in the vq35hr? Amsoil, Motul.....?

kool_yaar 04-30-2011 04:45 AM

motul is better than Mobil but an overkill and very $$ if you change oil frequently any brand name syn is fine. i have been using M1 syn for 50k+ miles with a couple changes with Quaker HP syn and RP, i noticed a bit of difference with them, car felt lighter but nothing big.

jasp178 04-30-2011 04:52 AM

I change it every 5k. But ive heard that mobil 1 is a class 3 syn oil, amsoil class 4, and motul class 5. also some vq owners i know said these motors dont like the mobil too much( burns it too quick)!

kool_yaar 04-30-2011 10:10 AM

i have alll that too, but the bottom line is that many ppl have sent M1 syn to be test to blacksone and the results after 5k were very comparable so at the milegae change imo you dont have to dish out the extra $$, but if you can afford it then like i said Motul has always had the best rep and results. Also iv had NO burning whatsoever.

I've been running the M1 also and haven't had any consumption issues either.

One thought to keep this whole oil choice matter in perspective is to consider the cost vs. benefit over the realistic duration of your ownership (or even the lifespan of the car). Considering most people will not own their car to the bitter end, and even if they do, it will most likely go down for a myriad of causes other than an engine failure due to lack of proper lubrication. All I'm saying is, if you change your oil regularly, even if you use regular dino oil, your engine will almost surely outlive your ownership and most likely the rest of the car's other systems. In the end, there will be lots of tired, disabled, broken down G35's in the wrecking yard with engines that will still run.

All that being said, I still use choose to use M1 just because it makes me feel good, not because my car would fail without it. Knowing that frees me up from worrying over whether I'm missing some minuscule (but irrelevant) benefit to be had by using brand-XYZ instead.

FWIW, here's my latest UOA running M1-EP with M1-EP filter. I've had nothing but good experiences with it, take note that earlier samples also included track days. The only one not running M1 here is the first UOA (Pennzoil).

The air filter used for the last 2-3 UOA's are the AMSOIL filters that came with the Injen SRI.

I think this is the best response ever. Most of us will trade/sell before we see any benifit of syn oil. Heck the car doesn't call for it, and probably won't last any longer with it. We just all feel better using a Synthetic of our preference.

I too have been using M1 synth and have zero consumption. While bored at work I spend an afternoon looking at UOA's on MyG37 and my conclusion was just get a 5 qt jug of M1 or Pennzoil from Wal-Mart and call it a day. Just make sure to always throw down a few extra bucks for a quality filter like the M1 or a Purolator PureOne.

Higher number does not = better

Oils like Castrol Syntec/Edge or M1 are Group 3 with 4 in them.

Castrol edge and syntec show fantastic UOAs, M1 EP does well too. The normal M1 5/30 is poo.

Amsoil and motul ? sure if you want to spend extra cash that something like Syntec which costs on sale 30 bucks with a quality filter, go a head.

If you want to go extra extra long on oil changes thats when you go with some better quality stuff, but if you are doing 3750 interval or 5k, it does not matter much.

Anyhow its best to get a UOA done, to see how your oil and engine are doing

^ Castrol Syntec oil before that was dealer oil

Green = Good
Red = Bad
Grey = Average

^ looks like if youre going with 5w30 then Pennzoil Plat is the best choice based on that chart

Maybe your DE doesn't like M1 5W30 but the UOA's I've seen for the HR are fine. Maybe it's related to the oil consumption probs with some DE's????

thescreensavers 05-02-2011 08:36 PM

^ the HR has 80% different parts so maybe thats why, but For the DE's there is not only a huge thread over at my350z, in UOAs Regular M1 5W/30 gets beaten buy cheaper oils.
