PLEASE HELP: 245's on OEM mags
Hi guys,
I asked this question before, but I really want to be sure about this kind of setup. I bought some winter tires off my brother which are in excellent condition. The issue is that he pulled them off of a Chrysler 300M (special edition) which has 245/45/18. Now I know these will fit perfectly on the back OEM rims, but what about the front ones which are 225's??
I think someone once responded that it's OK, but we are talking about a whopping 20mm more and I think that is quite significant. Is there a danger to squeezing that size tire on the front OEM rims?? Can they pop off while driving?? Has any of you put wider tires on the stock rims with success?? Please let me know ASAP as I need to take a decision by tomorrow.....

The front and rear 18" OEM rims on a Coupe are the same size: 18x8JJ with a 30mm offset.
If you put 245's on the front the difference in overall diameter is 0.6" and means the speedometer will be off by 2.7% (an indicated 60 mph is actually 61.6 mph.
Provided they fit in the wheelwell without rubbing I think you'll be fine.
My winter set is off by that much on the front and it didn't upset the VDC or ABS. It was recommended by my dealer.

If the OEM rims are the exact same size (18X8), then why do they put narrower tires on the front (225)?? And out of curiosity, how can a specific size rim, in this case 8", fit a variety of tire widths, I can understand a 5mm difference, but how can a 20mm difference not affect the fitting onto to the rim.

I can only tell you what they did, I can't tell you why. I'll guess and say it's to help with handling-- smaller diameter tires would yield more responsive steering.
As to a single rim that would be ok for such a large difference in width of tires: each width of rim would have a range of width of tires that it will accomodate safely. 225's and 245's must fit safely within that range........
The rim sizes are in the owner's manual-- section 10 page 8.

The VDC/Traction Control setup and the basic handling of the Coupe is built around a "stagger" between the front to rear wheels. That stagger is approximatly a 1" difference in outer diameter between the front wheel & tire and the rear. This should not be upset. 225s and 245s will fit fine on an 8" rim. The recommended rim width for a 225 tire is 7.5" and 245 8.5" (8" falls falls right in between, and will fit each fine.

245/40's are the same height as the stock 225/45's. I swapped my front tires in the first couple of weeks to 245/40's and added sway bars to set the neutral. This setup works extremely well. The 245/40's Pilot Sports fit extremely tight on the stock rims. There are definitely no rubbing or tracking problems. You will have problems though if you try to run 245/45's on the front. Because they are almost 1 inch taller, the wheels sensors will be spinning slower messing up the VDC, traction control and ABS. If you want to pull your stop light fuse and run without VDC, traction control and ABS you will be fine; otherwise don't waste the money. As an FYI, when I first picked up my car I made a deal with the local Michelin warehouse to trade out my stock tires for one-for-one trade for the 245/40's for free.
