245s on OEM 7" Rims?

I did a search...and it was inconclusive on if this would work. Here's the deal...I want to take my OEM G35 17x7 rims and mount either BFG G-Force TA Drag Radial P225/45 ZR 17s on them or Nitto 555R Drag Radial P 245/45 R 17 95Vs on there.

I need to know if the 245s will fit the stock 7" rims no problem...especially b/c they will be for Drag Racing and also if anyone has any experience with these tires vs. the old BFG Comp TA Drag Radials...which I never liked. Also, after doing a 1/2 hour of reseach the Nittos seem to be the favorite of Corvette drivers...great traction...a 15K life span vs 5K on the BFGs and a lot more side wall stability at highway speeds.

Throw your expertise at me please!

I believe that there is a member running 245/45 on the OEM rim and AutoXing it and they have had no issues.

245 on a 7" rim is likely not going to perform as well as well as a 225. The BIGGEST tire you would want to put on a 7" rim is a 225. In an ideal world the 225 would be on a 7.5-8" wide rim, the 245 on a 8.5-9" rim.

Wild man are you sure about that...My Moda R6 Rims that are 17 x 7.5 have the Kuhmo 245/45 712s on them and they fit like a glove...I think 8.5-9" rims are more like Z06 and Mustang Cobra type territory.

Well their's, I managed to stuff them on, in spite of being slightly under what the tire maker recommends as a minimum width. And their's the ideal rim to tire width ratio for performance sake. That being said, I recently found out the one of the cheif guys autocrossing a Z. Carter Thompson, who placed 6ths at nationals last year (behind all the S2Ks), runs Hoosiers (275s on 17" sized wheels (7.5" front, 8" rear).
Your not supposed to do that, but hey he did (shrugs shoulder)

Re: 245s on OEM 7" Rims?

Quite sure. There is a difference between can and should. I guess my sizes are better suited to turning than going perfectly straight though. My experience is all in turning... Most race tire mfg's suggest 9-9.25" for 245's

The front of a current Z06 uses 265's on 9.5's
The rear uses 295's on 10.5's IIRC

I've had poor luck with Nittos in the past and would suggest the BFG Drag Radials. They won't last as long, but they are the fastest drag radial. Regarding the 245's on 7" wide wheels some have used them with success, but I wouldn't recommend them for drag racing. I'm sure you'll be dropping tire pressures at the track and I don't know how stable the tire will be. Late model Mustang wheels fit G35's, maybe you can pick up a used set. Then you can have a dedicated pair of slicks for the track.

Re: 245s on OEM 7" Rims?

Well, actually manufactures don't recommend just 9" wide rims for 245's I researched this before I bought.

Using 245/40-18 as a example

Goodyear's corp site says the 245 tire "should" be run on 8 to 9.5" rims
http://www.goodyeartires.com/goodyea...ea=Performance

Same for Bridgestone

Same for Kumho
http://www.kumhotireusa.com/Products...=1&PtnID=KU-15

Same for Pirelli
http://www.us.pirelli.com/en_US/tyre...productid=2647

Same for Yokohama
http://www.yokohamatire.com/pdf/AVSsportBltn.pdf

And for the heck of it I looked up Kumho V700's on Kumho's site 245/35-18, recommended rim widths are the same, 8- 9.5" Which is of course a competition/race tire

9.25" is not the recommended rim width, Kumho does not say that on the V700. 9.25" is listed under the specs that are simply spelling out the width of the rim the tire was on when the published sectional width was gathered, that's why the 9.9" sectional width is next to 9.25. When listing sectional widths, all manufactures as a practice alway's spell out the width of the rim used to get that data.

The recommended rim width range for a 245/35-18 Kumho V700 tire is 8"-9.5"

Now, in a perfect world, I would rather run rims that match my sectional width. But no manufactuer say's I can't go under that spec to a degree, racing tires or street tires.

Well if you talk to any of the tire reps at scca events they will tell you what the 'idea' rim width for each tire is. Most of them try to list these ideals when the mention section width on " size ". Sure you can go bigger or smaller, but what the ideal is....
