wider tires on stock 18's that will fit new rims?
 

Due to unfortunate circumstances on the home front i was forced to cancel my order for SSR SP1's last winter.... well they are still on my list that im sending Santa (aka hoping i can make enough by xmas to buy them). My question is, since i need new tires soon (maybe 500 miles ago hah), what would be the widest or a nice size to go with on my stock wheels that will fit on some wider wheels. I wanted to go 10.5 inches in the rear and 9 up front with the new wheels, but i will compromize for the sake of not spending the excess money on tires now and tires later. If you would give me some suggestions for tire size and the widest new rims i could go with that tire size that would still work for me NOW... since they are bald as hell already. Thanks in advance

I had a similar delimma. I only had 5K of wear on my OEM Michelins and didn't want to trash relatively new tires from purchasing new rims. (And used tires don't sell for much.) To stay with your OEM tires (225/45 front and 245/45 rear) you're only option is to stay 18x8 front and 18x9 in the rear. The mininum acceptable tire width on an 18x9 rim is 245 so you'll be able to mount your current tire.

When you're ready you can then increase to 245/40 front and 275/40 rear and keep your proper overall diameters and stagger.

If you do decide to go with an 18x9 rear, be sure to say between +18 and +30 offset. Your stock offset is +30. By going to an 18x9, you're now 13mm closer to the outside fender. You have 28mm of play, so 28 - 13 = 15. Which means you have 15mm left of offset to play with. Since 30 - 15 = 15, this means that an 18x9 rim with a +15 offset would put you right at the limit to risk rubbing. So I would recommend no less than +18 to stay safe. Of course you stay with a +30 offset if you want a less aggressive stance.

thats not really my question unfortunatly. I dont have any more than 1000 miles left on my tires, and i want to replace them with something WIDER than stock. I want it to be okay on the stock rims but also work well with wider wheels when i upgrade later. I want to go WIDER than 225 in front and 245 in rear and was wondering if this is going to be a possibility

Just a thought ... a compromise in a way ... get 245 front and 245 rear ... rears wear out quicker, when you switch to new wider rims you would be able to keep the fronts and hopefully not waste more than 50% thread life on the rears. Not sure if that would do anything to alter the handling characteristics of the car or not, but again just a thought.

i have 255's on the front & 275's on the rear. (stock 8in rims)

alright im prolly gonna go with those sizes then cause those will stretch onto 9 and 10 inch wide rims right? Does the car drive differently with the wider tires

255 is the max for an 8 inch rim (according to the specs)

Sorry for misunderstanding your post, but if you have 1K or less on your current tires, then why bother with all of this? I know you said you don't have the funds for rims right now, and you need tires very soon. Can't you get a credit card with NO INTEREST FOR 6 or 12 MONTHS and put the wheels on that and then pay it off before the time is up?

I didnt realize a 275 would fit on an 8" wheel. I was kinda worried about mounting 275s on my OEM 19x8.5 wheels. Guess they will be ok afterall.

im still a student and only working part time, i dont want a credit card until i have money haha. im gonna end up with new 225 and 255's and then just sell them on my rims and try and get a little extra money on top of my stock 18's. thanks for the help. I didnt know whether what i wanted to do was possible or not, and i guess id have to make a little too much of a compromise on after market wheel width to do this. Thanks for the answers
