Question Registering Tire Presure Sensors

I have a 2004 G35X which came with a full size spare on a stock rim. The spare also has a pressure sensor mounted. I am using a 5 tire rotation pattern so according to my dealer when I put the wheel from the spare location on one of the axles the sensor in the spare needs to be registered with the onboard TPMS.

The first time they rotated the tires the tech told me he just went and did it, no charge, The next time it was done, they charged me for 45 minutes, which came to about $35.00 or so. Their reasoning was that their service only covers 4 tire rotation that doesn't require a different sensor to be registered with the TPMS. Sound like a load of crap but that's what I'm hearing.

Anyway, anyone know if there is a way to register a different sensor with the TPMS without using the Consult II tool? Anybody have access to a factory manual which could provide some hints? I searched all the forums for any previous questions like this. I found lots on issues with the TPMS and swapping sensors to other rims but nothing that seemed to cover this.

At work, to register the TPMS you need to use a consult II. But, if I remember, I don't think you have to do it if you're swapping a wheel. The sensor should be picked up automatically.

If it doesnt, just have them rotate the tires. Then come back a week later saying you're tire light is on. At our dealership, we don't charge customers to register the TPMS.

Lightbulb RE: Registering Tire Presure Sensors

Thanks, I might try that. Wish I was closer to your dealership.

I did do some more digging around and on Infinitihelp.com I found a TSB (http://www.infinitihelp.com/Ownershi.../ITB04-009.htm) that at first seemed to answer my question. However, reading it a little closer it states that it is not necessary to register the sensors when doing a tire rotation. It is only necessary when trying to perform more detailed diagnostics on the TPMS so that the correct location of each sensor is shown on the Consult II display. Since a "normal" tire rotation usually only involves swapping 4 tires that would make sense. The in-dash display only shows that a tire is low, not which one, so position is irrelevant.

Still I might try just having them do the 5 tire rotation and see what happens.
