One question though... my old key doesn't work now, has anyone else had a problem like that? I'm assuming that since the new key got programmed, it de-programmed my old key. I called the locksmith today, but he's out of town until tomorrow.

When I bought my car ('04 G35x A/T) the dealership gave me 1 Key and 2 fobs, one of which was un-programmed. I wanted to have 2 keys and 2 fobs. What I found to be the best deal for me was to have a locksmith cut a key with the chip in it and a key without the chip that gets you in the door. Then I had the dealership program everything. Here is how it broke down:
Dealership wanted:
$150.00 for the key and to be cut
$98.00 to program everything at the same time
$250.00 Total
Locksmith wanted:
$45.00 to cut a key with the chip in it
$2.00 for a key to just get in the door
Plus (from the dealership)
$98.00 to program everything at the same time at Infiniti
$145.00 Total
It took me a lot of time and hassle and I think I spoke to four different people at the dealership before asking for "the manager" to give me a quote on what I wanted done, because it seemed every person I talked to had a different idea of what I wanted done.
Hope this helps somebody

I just got the Howard key for my 03 sedan cut/programmed at the dealer. $65 for all keys/remotes (as said, all have to be done at once). Key itself was cheap off of ebay. ie.. $10-$15 or so. Just won't have the Infiniti logo

So I had an 04 with only one transponder key....dealer wanted $125 for the key and $85 to program. Plus a two hour travel to the dealer.
There are several aftermarket transponder keys made for the G35, you can have a locksmith cut the transponder key and program it. They must program all keys at the same time. If you use a non transponder key to start the car I am told it will disable the car for 10 minutes (unverified). I paid $80 plus tax to cut and program the new key.
There is a security code that the locksmith will have to enter into the programming machine, and they must subscribe to a service to get this code (my guy used his desktop computer to get the code). When my locksmith called the dealer to get the code and all they could provide was the code to cut a lock out (valet) key. Again I am told dealers have a special machine that only works on the Infiniti, and so they don't use a code, the Nissan dealer can't program it either.
If your locksmith doesn't seem to know about the security code keep looking in the phone book until you find one that does....not all of them pay for all of the codes and machines to program the keys for all makes....it is expensive for them.
As for the FOB, I bought one for 20 bucks on ebay and programmed it myself, my locksmith wanted $60, and the dealer $125 for the fob only.

Nissan "should" be able to program the transponder key. They all use the same technology. But since the cost of reprogramming and cutting was only $65, why not go to the dealer?
In your case, I can see why as the dealer was 2 hours away. In that case, yes, calling locksmiths is the way to go. Might want to start with asking them about programming a transponder keys as your first question.
I called a few in my area and some said "yes" and some said "no". But I had to go to the dealer anyway so I had them do it.
