The strut tower brace ties the 2 strut towers together not allowing them to move nearly as much in cornering. Helps to tie the front end handling together...I noticed a modest improvement but since the G already handles great it is hard to notice for some people.

I have a 1/2 inch spacer and was using the engine cover...that's why it rubbed.

No, the hood pad for heat protection. Since it is rough against the smooth aluminum it put the rub marks in it. I would imagine you could polish them out, I just never tried since I'm selling my car.
