wow, i don't even know how to ship this thing, it's pretty heavy since it's mdf wood. what city is that? maybe greyhound will take it

Birch ply is MUCH lighter than mdf. The only thing I dislike about Birch ply is that there may be voids, depending on the quality of the wood. It's roughly about $5 - 10 for a 4' x 8' sheet compared to MDF, but if you go with Grade A birch, which is also goes by the name of Baltic Birch, you will find no voids, or maybe a tiny one here and there. Some of the voids on the B, C, and remaining grades may be filled up, but it loses it's strength. Baltic Birch is quite costly, possibly about $100 per sheet, however, you don't need 3/4", 1/2" would be fine since each layer, is cross laid. Basically one layer is horizontal and the next goes in a vertical grain and the pattern continues. Birch play has the grain and the layers all going the same way. Since they are cross layered, it adds strength. You can also get Oak Ply, which is a bit lighter than birch ply, but it is also about $15 more than MDF for the same sized sheet.

Trupan is much lighter than MDF as well, though it is more like the material that MDF uses. I haven't used trupan, but was going to for my previous car, but I never got to finish the build unfortunately.

To give you an idea how much lighter birch ply is, I used to have 3 10's, which weighed about 15 lbs each and they were very easy to carry. I'm not a big guy either.. 6'0" and approx 150 lbs. I also had a 75 lb 18" sub that was 2.4 cu. ft. in an Oak Ply enclosure and it was much easier to carry and you could feel the weight difference between that and 2 12's (which weighed 30 lbs) in an MDF box that was a tad under 2.4 cubes, I believe 2.25 cu. ft.

I'd probably go with Trupan since you wouldn't have to worry about voids, but if you got the cash, Birch ply would be another route, and I'm pretty sure it's also lighter than Trupan.

 

Just how heavy is this? I may be interested...
