Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

I purchased the garmin 2610 for two essential reasons. The antenna in this unit is built in, and not a short antenna as in the StreetPilot III, and I could therefore mount it above the instrument cluster. With the unit in this position, it is in my driving line of sight, and I don't have to glance to the right as with the prior configuration where I had the SP III installed in the pit where the OEM SAT unit would have been placed.
I really love these electricial adjustable seats in the G35c. I am not very tall, and I can adjust the seat upward to a point where it is confortable.
The second reason I purchased this 2610 unit is that Garmin has changed from proprietary memory chips to a Compact Flash format. I have lots of them around from my digital camera. If one wanted, the Compact Flash can be obtained in sizes up to 4 Gb. You would have room for maps of Europe and all USA on one chip. Really enjoy the new unit, especially with its touch screen or remote control.

Another picture of the StreetPilot 2610 install showing how the unit is in the driving line of sight. It does not obstruct forward vision, and in my opinion is really in a safer location than having to glance to the right to view the map information. Oral turn by turn instructions aid in keeping your eyes on the traffic ahead.

Re: Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

i like, but one thing. If a cop sees all that in front of your vision i think he might give you a ticket. I got a ticket for having my school parking permit on my visor while i was driving. Also was about to give me a ticket for my V1 radar but i took it off before he could see it. LOL. Even thou its legal to have one it has to be in a position where it doesnt block the vision.

Just letting you know get checked before its final man.
But looks real awesome

thats looks so terrible....

Too much [censored] going on your dash. Why don't you just glue a laptop and a frying pan on the dash while you are at it.......

I just put mine in the cubby. I will be hiding the wires shortly. The good thing this way is that when I park, I can just put the unit in the cubby so as to not attract any unwanted attention.

Re: Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

Good suggestion. May bring the G36c to a local CHP station and ask if there is any problem. It does not block any forward vision, and if not prohibited by any state regulations, it is really a safer location than having it in the center of the car, and looking over to the right to view map details. I like your suggestion, and will have it checked out.
Garmin provides three ways to attach the unit. Two are adhesives, permanent and one is considered temporary. The one in the picture is their "bean bag" mount which is easily moved. I did not put it in the pit where the OEM NAV unit would have been installed, as the door lid would be directly over the built in antenna and would probably cause degraded satellite reception.

Re: Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

I have not experienced any satellite signal degradation due to the door lid. I use the bean bag mount to keep it on the dash in my wife's Lexus RX300 and the number of satellites acquired and their signals are the same. The antenna must be really good - its hidden inside the unit after all :-).

Re: Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

I'm glad to hear that you are getting no reception problems with the pit location install. I do plan to check with CHP to see if I will have any potential ticket problems with my current install upon the instrument cluster. I really think that is a much safer location, rather than having to glance to the right to see map information.
With my prior StreetPilot III, I was able to remove the mounting bracket and use Velcro to keep it in place in the pit. Have you found any way to remove the attachment bracket from the new 2610? Also, I was thinking of using the "Pit" location for placing a performance meter offered by either Beltronics or Escort. As if I didn't already have enough gadgets. :-)

Re: Garmin 2610 Install in a G35c.

RashMan1450 raised an interesting question in a prior post about whether I might be subject to a "ticket" for mounting the StreetPilot on top of the moveable instrument cluster. Darn good question. Spent some time in the local CHP office discussing the matter. Without going into a long message, I don't think according to them, that I will have any problem. They tended to agree with my theory, that it is a much safer placement being in my driving line of sight, rather than glancing off to the right to view any map information.
