You act as if you've been totally ripped off, in which I belive you haven't. You paid retail price and probably 30-45 minutes worth of labor. I would understand if you were charged $300 for $150 speakers. Now that would be what I considered ripped off.

I paid full retail for my car, I'm not acting like I got ripped because thats what the market allows.

Re: got screwed by an audio shop

My wife is a manager at the before mentioned chain of Circuit City. They, as well as Best Buy and others, do mark up car audio at about 100%. But let me just be clear. Their cost is 50% of retail price.

Sometimes a bit more sometimes less.

But if you think that mark up is bad...plasma and hd tv's are worse in some cases. Oh, and the beloved Monster Cable, right around 300%. Example, a $100 cable cost them about $36.

But what can you do...

Do your research and bargain

I just got my dealer to agree to sell me the kit and XM harness for my car for their exact cost, and install it for $45. $328 total-- all because I got their #s and used them to fight. Much lower than the $900 estimate I'd been previously faced with...

BULLSH!T

Car audio (some) being half of cost is not 100% mark up. It is 50 points or 50%. Plasma TV and HDTV (As well as all video) has some of the worse (for dealer) mark up. For example: A 42" Panasonic plasma (TH42PA20U) costs $3060 from Panansonic. It sells for $3999.00. That is 23% mark up, and that is a high profit example. I have a Zenith 42" that I pay $2836.00 and it sells for $2999.00 which is 5.4% profit. I have owned my audio / video store for 25+ years. I am also a member of a HUGE buying group which gets me the lowest cost possible. The highest mark up is in no name speaker wire, but nothing nowhere close to 100%.
It is dis information like this that leads people to believe there should be huge discounts where such discounts are not possible.

Re: got screwed by an audio shop

i still wonder how online sellers can offer items so cheap. Perhaps it is becuase they do not need to have a shop and pay bills for such things as a store front and can simply have a shoddy warehouse in a bad neighborhood. BTW, these sellers I am speaking of actually are authorized dealers. I checked.
