removing rear deck

I got my G about two weeks ago. So far I installed an aftermarket spoiler, put in an alarm system and added aftermarket tires and wheels. This weekend I stripped the doors, added dynamat and installed a pair of components. While dynamatting the trunk I noticed that there are cutouts (I have the base model stereo system) for 6" x 9" speakers. I was planning on running only 6.5" components up front, but since the 6x9 cutouts are already there, I figured, why not use them? Then came the problem: how do you get the rear deck lid off? I took off all the fasteners and the rear tail light but it still doesn't want to come out. All the snaps that I can see are loose. It appears as though its still attached at the side of the car?

Anybody ever take their rear deck off and add 6x9 to the base stereo system? Any tips, pointers or suggestions would be appreciated?

PS....if I put 6x9's in there, will I have problems when I drop my two 12's in the trunk with 1200 rms on them (sound pressure from the 12's pushing the 6x9's out)?

Thanks for any tips.

Re: removing rear deck

Yea I tried to tighten the screws for the speaker grill back there and it was a no go. It looks like you have to pull the rear side panels out in order to pull that deck out. It seems that the rear pillars are tabbed into the rear deck so you have to find a way to get those out. Sorry Don't know how, not about to go magyver on my car i'll leave that up to the dealer. I got just as far as you did and gave up after seeing those tabs from the rear pillar

Re: removing rear deck

I am pretty sure that accessing the rear deck requires the back of the back seats to come out... I had the rear deck rattle TSB done and before I brought it in I downloaded the actual TSB document to see what was involved. I am not 100% sure but check it out for yourself. I think it might be different for the coupe and sedan seeing how the back seats are very different....

If you search for it under the 2003 G35 you should be able to find the documents... they are under "STRUCTURE:FRAME AND MEMBERS"

I dont know if this helps you..if not sorry I was useless... Either way let us know how you make out! Best of luck!
