double din with dual climate

double din with dual climate
I got my double din from Yoshi's Garage like everybody and finally had a chance to install it (took me last night and tonight, takes a while to get to the radio). Anyway, as others have mentioned before it looked like the new AC control was pretty much set up for dual climate, but was missing the button (see red circle in pic below). So I just took my handy fine tip soldering iron, removed the dual climate button from the old board, and soldered it on to the new board (the new board even had solder on the contacts already, how nice). Dual climate works fine...and now I can play all my mp3's again. The only downside was I lost the stock xm radio, cause alpine's "xm ready" is really only ready for alpine's xm radio. So I might replace it with alpine's xm radio, and throw in a CD changer for fun as well. We'll see.

Here's the new AC controller after I soldered on the button. You can see it's a little crooked ![Smilie](https://g35driver.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)

Re: double din with dual climate
Here's the stock NAVI unit. Nice and isolated, wasn't any problem installing the double din with NAVI.

Re: double din with dual climate
narkotic: I have focal utopias in the front, focal polyglass in the rear powered by a JL audio 450/4, a 10w7 in the trunk powered by a JL audio 500/1. It's pretty sweet, though I wonder if should be running a 1000/1 for the sub...I think it could use a little more power, esp since there's no flow of air from the trunk into the cabin.
nuttyprof: I have no idea. I had the premium package so my coupe came with dual climate. Who knows, maybe all the parts are standard and they just make it unusable for those who don't want to get the premium package. Wouldn't bet the farm on it though.

Re: double din with dual climate
jgainsle,
i have the focal utopia in the front and rear. I used the phoenix gold ti 500.4 to drive the component. Recently the amp went south on me and replace with arc audio(4150 xxk). Man, this amp is a killer. Now my high are more smoother and softer. Anyway, just thought i let you know if you decided to upgrade in the future.

Re: double din with dual climate
tig: yeah, I don't really use dual climate either, so I figure if my solder job didn't work no big loss. But it's still cool to retain the functionality I paid for.
hksjza70: There are several drawbacks to installing an aftermarket head unit in this car. 1) steering wheel controls stereo controls won't work anymore, 2) you lose the NAVI audio, 3) if you have the stock xm radio, it's not compatible with at least the alpine radios. If you got a clarion head unit then it would prob work. But I like alpine. (4) also, it's about $300 shipped from japan for the double din with new AC controls. You could conceivably get around (1) if you somehow wired up the steering wheel controls to the head unit's remote (if it came with one). (2) seems much harder to get around, altho it could be done with a mixer somewhere in your audio path.
Those were the cons. The pros are: (a) much better audio - with the 4V preouts the sound quality is noticably better on my focals vs the Soundgate LOC's from the stock head unit, (b) whatever cool features your head unit has: mp3, sub pre-outs, time correction, etc. I can't live without my mp3's on CD-RW.
I liked how it sounded with just the stock unit and the focals and sub, but I felt it was only 80% of the way to the sound I really wanted. Now I think it's much closer to 100% - have some tuning to do, I haven't had a chance to readjust the amps yet.
g35mt: Sweet, thanks for the tip. PG is nice, but Arc, man, that's pretty high end stuff. I do notice the focals are a bit bright at times. I'm hoping they'll tune down a little as they get more broken in. Or maybe I'll just wait for my high end hearing to fade a little![Smilie](https://g35driver.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
