What sub should I get??

After finding out the hard way that my XM tuner box was incompatible with my new G35 (in other words, my salesperson lied and said that it would work with ANY aftermarket tuner), I've decided I need to spend a little less on the rest of my new sound system. Since I have to put down an extra $400 to get this setup, I'm going to have to cut my
spending for a sub. Oh, btw, the dealer tried to charge me $700 to put that tuner in, so I just said since I'd only had the car for a day and the salesperson obviously wanted to see me ripped off, I'd have no problem returning it to them immediately! Yeah, so they willingly offered to put it in at the factory cost!

Anyway, I'm looking to spend about $300 for a sub for my G35 coupe. I already have the alpine MRPM350 amp (looks like it's about 350 rms watts). I was looking at the JL audio 12" w3 with the wedge shaped box, but I'm not sure if I can wedge that all the way in the back. I also saw a pair of boxed 10" W0's that would barely fit in the back of the trunk; however, that kills about half of my trunk space. I also saw the 10" Infinity basslink, but I don't know what the sound quality is like for that. What do you guys recommend I do, without resorting to making a custom box? Thanks!

Re: What sub should I get??

I would stick with a single 10 unless you need to have a lot of bass, then a pair of 10's would work out. You will not be able to fit a 12 in there without doing some custom floor mounting for it. A 12" is simply to large to work well in our trunks.

I would highly suggest a 10w6v2 jl audio sub. This is assuming you dont mind buying online since this sub is probably over 300 retail.

As far as a box is concerned...just find a sealed box with about .5 to .75 cuft of air space and the 10w6v2 sub will sound great.

One other option would be to purchase an 8w7 online and throw that in a fairly small box.. This would also sound great as well. The 10w6v2 would definitely be my choice between the two however. But the w7 is definitely not a bad alternate...

Hope my rambling helped..

Re: What sub should I get??

Thanks! The 10w6v2 looks like a good option. Looks like it's around $240 on ebay. I'm wondering if that alpine amp would be enough power for the sub. The amp says it's 350 watts at 2 ohms and 200 at 4 ohms...and the sub says it takes 400 watts at dual 4 ohms. Do you think this'll still work, or should I look at getting a different amp?

A word of caution about buying JL Audio products online, you get no manufacturer's warranty.

good luck,

Re: What sub should I get??

Yup, amg35 is correct. Keep that in mind, but for the money you save...you could always buy another if it has problems in the future. Retail on that sub, the 10w6v2, is close to $450. You can get one online for under $250 easy.

E10A is a sweet sub..im going to be using a pair for my setup.

200 watts is enough for the 10w6v2...but 400 watts would be perfect..

Re: What sub should I get??

check JL's website, they've got a chart showing optimum power levels for each of their subs . . .
personally I picked the 10W7, but I'm going to be running it with a JL 500/1 amp . . .

I have a Polk Momo 12" 1000w sub in my sedan powered by a Rockford Fosgate amp. I have no idea if it fits the coupe, but I can tell you that you really feel it going through your chest at high levels.

Re: What sub should I get??

I just purchased/installed a JL Audio 8W7 and it sounds great in the coupe. I listen to all forms of music from Eminem to System of a Down to Aaron Neville. The bass is tight and the sealed enclosure fits under the 6x9's so I still have 80% of my trunk space left. I also purchased Focal components and coaxials. I am running all of this off of a JL 500/5. No matter how hard I drive the system it just keeps sounding better. Best aftermarket investment so far...

2004 G35C 6MT, Diamond Graphite, 35% Tint, Focal 165W, Focal 165CA, JL Audio 8W7, JL Audio 500/5, Phatbox MP3 (60GB), Dynamat Extreme
