all you need to do is use a voltmeter and check the wires plugged into the socket. if there;s no voltage, then obviously a new plug wont fix the problem. And if thats the case, if it is not a fuse, it will probably be easier to run new wires to the socket than trace the problem.
Did you not install you stereo yourself? If not the installer might have cut the wires or may not have even plugged the wires back into the socket.
