Newbie, car wiring?
I was thinking bout doing a few things soon. First of all I got a Pac AAI-NIS2 harness and an Ipod plug that charges my Ipod when pluged in. I was thinking about puting a switch between the Ipod plug and power source so that I can choose when I want it to charge, will this idea work? Does anyone know if the Ipod connector thru the base needs power to function?
Next I was going to hardwire my radar detector. I was thinking that I would also put a switch on this so I wont have to reach to my detector to turn it on.
A FEW QUESTIONS?
One main question is that should I get power for these devices thru my fuse box or should I tap into a wire in my car. I was thinking about putting a plate over my ash tray and lighter (since I dont smoke) for the switches. Would I be able to use the power for the lighter for these devices, if so how much power could I tap from it safely? Both the Ipod connection and radar hardwire have inline fuse holders. On my last car I taped into the ignition harness to get power for my gauges. Also how are switches wired? I'm sure its pretty basic. The switches I looked at were round rocker switches with an LED, 5/BAG.
I have a few other ideas that I will probably save for a later time. It would be nice to clarify a few questions before I got to far.

Wire your radar detector to a switched 12v source and just leave it in the on position. Then it will turn on whenever your car is on and turn off when it is off.
You can wire your ipod the same way.
Switches are easy. 12v source to one tab, 12v out to the component, and a ground for the switch if it needs power for an led.

That sounds simple. Should it be ok to just use the power going to my cigarette lighter for both sources?
Also does any one know a lot about Ipod's? I'm just curious if the bottom connector on Ipod's require power to function.

It would be fine wiring them both to your cig. Just remember for not to plug anything that draws a lot of current into that cig lighter. It would take quite a bit to pop that fuse but it is possible.
I use my pax cig lighter to power my backup cam and I wired the cig lighter to my battery with a switch so I can charge while the car is off.

Yeah those are the instructions that were sent with the harness. It says it provides a negative output for when the unit is using the AUX 1. Is this a ground? I'm a newbie with this stuff, so what do I do with it?
