Class "D" for amps.. what is it exactly?

Should I be looking for a certain class for amps? What's the difference between each? I kind of have an idea, but wanted to know a better explanation. Thanks.

You can read about it here:

Bottom line-if amplifier is built well, then it will sound well no matter what approach is used. Do not shop for certain class, listen to various models and buy what you like/can afford.

90% of what you'll see are now class D amps. They're more power efficient, so easier on your electrical system and run cooler. Most manuf build them for those specific reasons so you'll have to really be looking to find something that's not a class D in stores.

Unless you're a **** retentive EE (and i speak as one ) I wouldn't worry about it. Buy the amp you like. Your installer will be able to help you make the right decisions for sound and power concerns.

For a subwoofer you want a class D amp. You could use a class A or AB, but your current draw will be much higher than a D and you won't be able to hear a difference. I once had a 1000 watt rms Soundstream class A amp that would practically make my car stall if I cranked it up high while idling.

For door speakers, a class A or AB is normally used for the better sound quality. It doesn't make as much of a difference on current draw since door speakers handle much less power than subwoofers.
