Re: navigation DVD copy
You cant copy the disc, its a dual layer DVD. You could try DVD shrink, but the player would probably spit it out since you would be compressing the data.
Later this summer a dual layer burner is supposed to come out but it will be $$$ and the discs will probably be $6-10 each.
It would be nice if there was a soultion, as a replacement disc is very expensive.

Re: navigation DVD copy
$6-10 would be worth it. An industry-first consumer dual layer burner would probably not be. (I didn't know they're not on the market yet.)
Which player would spit it out? The one in the car or the dvd writer? What does DVD shrink do? Does it put two layers into one?
Thanks for the info.

Re: navigation DVD copy
A dual layer disc ( most movies and Nav discs) are 9.4 GB, double what blank dvds available currently are (4.7gb)
When the dual layer burners come out they probably will in the 300-400 range. If you check www.techbargains.com they always list the latest prices and models for DVD burners and are a good source for DVD technology news.
For info on dvd shrink go to www.afterdawn.com, this site covers DVD backup/burning .
DVD shrink allows you to "shrink" a 9.4 disc onto a 4.7 one. For movies this is fine since DVD's contain a bunch of extras which take up tons of space. With DVD shrink you can pick out just the movie part and "shrink" it on one disc without a difference in picture quality.
Doing this with a data disc is going to cause errors since NAV system is not designed to read the compression DVD shrink uses.
Edited by lorinserbenz on 04/24/04 12:47 PM.

Re: navigation DVD copy
I don't know that even the dual layer burners will help too much. I think that the format will actually only store 8.5gig. So a larger disk still won't copy.
As for "shrinking" software, I think it is more that the software wouldn't even be able to attempt to compress the data. The reason is that it doesn't ust blindly compress the data, throwing away data, but knows that it is working with MPEG2 data, and just compresses it at a higher ratio. I doubt that the navigation DVD is mpeg.

Re: navigation DVD copy
yeah in theory the format is 9.4GB but in reality its less than 9GB, but the same is true for all dual-layered movies and nav discs. Soon you will be able to make a 1:1 copy.

Re: navigation DVD copy
Seems to me that if you think the update is worth it, just buy it, if you don't think it's worth the price, don't. It's not like your current disc is useless simply because an update is available.
Re: navigation DVD copy
There's also the matter of whether or not the Nav system's DVD drive can read a burned disc. Does it support the + or - variety, or both, or neither?
In addition, I should advise you that this forum's policy will treat asking for and attempting to sell (or give away) Nav DVD copies the same as ESM cd copies. Threads will be deleted. Why not this thread? Nobody's trying to acquire it.. it's just a technical discussion of the feasability. I simply assume you're trying to make an archival backup of your own disc. ...and I think the issue of having an archival copy is very legitimate. There is power to the DVD unit even without the key in the ignition - so a thief can easily eject your DVD.

Re: navigation DVD copy
I tried using a compression utility to backup my Nav disc from my Eclipse, it would not play it just as I thought.
Nav discs really are not an issue at the moment from a illegal copy standpoint. Copies WILL become an issue when updates are released.
My want for a backup is in case my disc is stolen or scratched. Stratches are not too much of an issue because most companies will send you a new disc if you send them the scratched for a nominal fee.

Re: navigation DVD copy
One of the member mentioned before that movie is mpeg2. This can easily be compressed. Nav system read raw data and can't be compress. I am suprise that you were able to compress the data and leave the file extension alone. What software did you use to compress it?
Re: navigation DVD copy
Updates have been released already. My disc is 6.1. The current version is 6.2. I believe some of the original '03 cars came with 6.0. It's an annual thing.. expect 6.3 sometime around October-ish.

Re: navigation DVD copy
I used DVDtwo1(mac version) one and the disc image tool on my mac. I didnt try DVD shrink on my PC. It really doesnt matter what compression you use since the DVD Rom drive cant uncompress the format. My Nav disc shows 7.4 GB used, which would fit on a one of the new Dual Layer discs.
Re: navigation DVD copy
I have the original (6.0) disk, which probably contains data from late 2001. I've skipped the last two updates, but I've noticed some local addressing errors recently, so I might go for the next one. And, if Zenrin ever releases a disk that updates the nav's functionality (e.g., make it default to the last city), I'd definitely be interested.
