After Market Steering Wheel Controls

I have the Kenwood 915 head unit installed and several other aftermarket components. Is there a way to patch the steering wheel controls into the after market stereo reciever or are the controls worthless now. Has anyone been able use the steering wheel controls with the aftermarket components.

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

I have one that I'll be using with my Alpine CDA-9835 HU. I'm still thinking of the best place to put that dang IR wire. It'll either have to be at the reading lights area (on no - more wire needed).... or somewhere low.

I think I might go to Radio Shack and see if they have like a little 1/2" hollow box you can use.... maybe I can get something like that to poke out of the area near the emergency brake - or better yet, beside the seat heater controls. With the 6MT, it just might work since the seat heater controls are side-by-side with some room beside them......

Where have other people mounted the SWI-X and got good visibility to the HU?

Bama,

Take some pics of your SWI-X install and all the several different locations you comtemplated of positioning the sensor. Then do a DIY guide for the install.

Hacking into the steering wheel column and its wiring can be intimidating for some people.

What about putting the sensor in a little drilled hole in the sunglass holder up above?

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

who said you have to hack into the steering wheel?
There are 2 wires that comes out of the steering wheel and they are currently in one of the factory harnesses.
Basically what our steering wheel does is provide different voltages when any button is pressed. This can vary from i believe +/- 1.5V to +/- 7V I think these values are wrong but i read it in the service manual...
With the PAC unit, you will have to "train" it i guess.

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

I forgot that there is a factory stock harness plug for the steering wheel controls behind the deck........I guess you can splice/crimp the wire from that stock plug.

Why does the PAC website install instructions mention you have to get at the wiring in the steering wheel column? If you had stock steering wheel controls in the first place, why not just use the harness plug wiring?????

Anyway, I'm not installing it since 1) my panasonic deck already has a wireless remote, 2)my right hand is often on the shifter which is in VERY close proximity to my deck's manual controls. and 3) didn't like the stock steering wheel controls anyway, 4) with the SWI-X, I think you only gain on/off, volume up/down....does the SWI-X do radio tuning and track up.down too? Seemed like more of an inconvinience to install something that would yield so little results and gained functionality IMO.

You right hand is so close to the deck's controls in the Coupe, its not like a caddy or lincoln where the driver's seat is far enough away from the deck that you have to learn forward to toggle the stereo switches. If you had to always learn forward to adjust your stereo while driving as in larger cars, then I can understand the need/want for steering wheel controls

Just my $0.02...

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

I was reading on the specs on the device, and whatever you can do with the remote, you can have the SWI-X do with the controlls. So I can still switch between modes/bands (FM1-FM2-FM3-AM-CD/MP3)... I can make the power button on the steering wheel either "power" or I can even make it a mute button instead. The other controlls are volume and tuning control. But if you HOLD down/up the tuning button, then instead of going from saved channel 1-6 to the next one in line, it will actually seek up or down, depending on which way you flip the button. It will also act as a fast forward/reverse on the CD if you hold it down...... and of course will jump to the next song for under 1 sec flip of the switch. Besides, if I'm squating back in my seat and leaning left (ghetto position), it's a bit harder to reach the stereo in the middle, yo? Word. lol

It looks like the best place will be up above to mount - though it will be a pain to run that wire all the way around the windshield. Can you remove that panel beside the front windshield on the driver's side??? ... or is there airbag equipment in there?

Bama,

Do you mean pillar A? YOu can just tuck the wire into the pillar and run it along the headliner. You don't need to remove pillar A in order to run the wire. When I hardwired my Passport 8500, i ran the wire down pillar A and tucked it in there with a plastic putty knife.

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

hey bama, you can tuck the wire on the passengers side A-pillar VERY EASILY!
I did this with my Valentine1 radar detector. I fed the wire under the dash and tuck to the side where the door closes, tuck it in the pillar and then tuck in by the windshield.

An alternative route would be to go straight from the center console/Headunit, behind the dash and behind the clock, and then behind the center a/c display piece, then tuck by the windshield, go up the A-pillar.

Good luck!

Re: After Market Steering Wheel Controls

I guess that's what you call it - Pillar A. Yeah - that left side of the windshield on the interior. I'll try that and let you know how it goes.... thanks.
