How to mount amp on back of sedan's rear seats?
 

Unlike the coupe, the sedan's rear seat does not fold down. This is creating a bit of an issue for mounting an amp to the back of the seats because there are few places that will accept screws to hold the amp in place.

Should I get some MDF board, attach it to the metal, then affix amp to the MDF? If so, would 5/8" MDF work?

Any other ideas?

I placed my amp on the floor at the base of the rear seat and made a carpeted MDF cover over it to protect it. I didn't want to block the pass through.

Is there a place you can mount it on the roof of the trunk? Like under the rear deck? If not your idea sounds pretty good. I bet you coudl get away with using 1/4-1/2" MDF. If it's too thick it'll take up too much space.

I'm not familiar with the sedan but is that a hole to the cabin like a ski storage type thing? If so you'll probably want to cut the MDF out with a hole or in halves so you can still use that hole.

the metal cross braces are a great place to mount first a MDF board to, and then, biuld an amp rack...ust make sure you get it secured with a good number of screws or bolts.

16psibrick, i noticed on one of your G35 coupe installs you mounted an amp directly on the back of the rear seat. Did you pre drill holes into the metal bars of the back to mount the wooden base, or were you just able to use self tapping screws in that situation?

I would go with what your idea is. 5/8" is fine, but 1/2" should do. If you want to save weight, go with Birch, but I don't think they have small sheets like they do with MDF. I know a 3/4" 2 x 4 is about 8 or 9 bucks at Home Depot.

I mounted two decent sized amps, distro blocks, and a Cap using MDF that I carpeted by screwing the MDF into the metal cross braces on the back seat. You have to remove the back seat and get some decent sized sheet rock screws and screw in from the trunk into the back seat area and then just cut-off the excess of the screws sticking out intot he seat area. I'll try to post some pictures tomorrow and maybe get some dimensions. I used 3M spray clue and a staple gun for the carpeting of the MDF. Pain in the butt for a new guy like me, but looks good (except for the carpet f-up by the ski pass-through) and very secure.

I must be some sort of dumba## (no comments necessary), but I really like to see pictures of this stuff. I'm putting a Rockford Fosgate amp in my 07 Sedan, and I'd like to see how best to set it up/mount it while not obstructing the pass-thru space. (man I wish I paid more attention in wood/metal shop) :bowrofl:

Is the passthrough just through the arm rest? If so, just draw out where the pass through would be and then drill a hole somewhere inside the hole on the wood and use a jigsaw to cut to that shape.

I was able to mount two amps to the cross brace. Most amps can be possitinoned so that two screws (on oposite sides and ends of the amp) can be secured. I have had this set up for 5 years now with no issues.

where can i get hinges to flip my back seats down

unless you make something your self, it aint happening

I just placed the amp on the back of the seats and drilled screws in. Plain and simple no problems...
