Ok, so I installed my system today using the DIY on this board. The only thing I did differently is run my remote wire off of a switch.
I am running an Alpine Type R 10"
Alpine MRP-M500 Amp
Stock headunit.

Anyways, my lights are dimming and I was wondering if the way I wired something could be the problem or not? My dad is really on my case because he thinks I am going to mess up the whole electrical system on the G. I just really want to stop this dimming. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance guys!

 

You need to either 1... upgrade your alternator and battery or 2 (which is easier and way more cost effective) get yourself at least a 2 farad capacitor. It basically keeps a charge like a battery and feeds your amp a consistent power supply. So get "cap" and you will be all set.

 

do big 3 wiring upgrade first. cheapest and a good chance it will solve your problems.

 

I don't think I would trust myself doing this. Would auto shops do this?

 

Most probably wouldn't know what you were talking about. A good car audio shop would be your best bet.

Make sure you have good power/ground. Then do the big 3 upgrade.

 

I had this problem too, and installed a 1 farad cap. Seems to have stopped the headlights from dimming, although the interior lights still dim when the gain is up.

 

Yeah I am going to try out my cousin 1 farad cap and see if it works. If it does, I am going to buy a nice Rockford Fosgate one. In the meantime will it hurt my car badly if I run it like this for a couple of days?

 

Check the wiring of your sub and make sure that it isn't wired with too low of an impedance for your amp to handle.

Your stock wiring is too small to supply the current demands of your sound system. A capacitor may mask the problem but it won't eliminate it. On the other hand, the big three upgrade is simple, cheap, and fixes the source of the problem. It really should be your first step.

As far as your question goes, running your system with the lights dimming shouldn't cause any major problems in the short term. However, your amplifier is likely not putting out full power, as the electrical system is having trouble keeping up. I would keep the volume low enough that the lights don't dim.
