Low Cost Bose Upgrade!
Low Cost Bose Upgrade!
I have posted here asking questions about upgrading the Bose premium system in my 04 sedan so I figured I should also post my experience. While I have bought new speakers and a new amp for my G, the only step I've managed so far (last weekend) is to simply change the rear door speakers with Alpine SPS-170A 6 1/2" coaxial speakers.
I am an avid music listener and have an audiophile system in my house. My problem with the stock Bose system has been it's low frequency dominance. I never felt it delivered a full spectrum of audio and since most of what I enjoy is instrumental (try Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon) I really hated the lack of mid to upper mid, imaging and depth.
I was initially concerned as I changed the driver side rear and compared it to the psnger rear (that still had stock) as the SPS had noticeably better highs but also noticeably less lows. I trooped on and replaced both sides, put the car back together and went for a ride. WHAT AN IMPROVEMENT, and for only $40 US on eBay! I HIGHLY recommend those that are looking for a low cost improvement to try this simple step. You'll be very pleased and may even find that's all you need to do!
Even though the Alpine's are 4 ohm the Bose amp drives them fine (still have stock up front). Previously I always found I had to have the fader favor the front (2), now I can leave it at 0 (middle) and the quality is so good I'm seriously considering stopping here and selling the SPR-176A's and the 1000W - 4 chan amp I bought.
Bottom line, I recommend you focus on the rear doors first, relieves some of the base and a set of coaxials will fill in nicely. Even if you want to do more, buy a decent set of coaxials for the back doors and nothing else. Install them and try them, then decide if you want to go further.
My 2 cents...
... to Infiniti and beyond....!

Re: Low Cost Bose Upgrade!
Wait until you get to the front doors ...
The biggest problem with the factory system is the weak highs (which in turn makes it sound bottom heavy).
Personally I like to keep the tweeters up front only, I feel it creates a more realistic "stage" with the band playing infront of me. Some people prefer to be immersed in the middle of the music though. No right or wrong answers, go with what makes your ears happy.
