Are speakers supposed to have serial numbers??

I think I just had a fast one pulled on me . The speakers look brand new. They are even sealed, complete with "Infinity" on the wrapping. Or is it because the serial number is required for warranty and I didn't purchase or have it installed by an authorized Infinity dealer?

Re: Are speakers supposed to have serial numbers??

This is a common internet practice. Many brands, (JL, MB Quart are examples) do not allow internet sales AT ALL. Since they only sell to their own authorized (non-internet)dealers, you must buy from them. If you buy from the internet and have a problem product, not only will they not honor the warrantee, but these companies will trace the serial number back to the authorized dealer it ultimately came from, and potentially cancel their dealer contract. For this reason, when these authorized dealers let items go out the back door, they very often peel off, or destroy the serial number so the item can not be traced back to them. This whole process SUCKS! The worst part, is that generally the internet price for "barred-from-the-internet" products is substantially lower. So it appears that these manufacturers are looking to maintain artificially high profit margins for their dealers as well; a process which is clearly not legal. They claim it is to control the sale of stolen and counterfit items available on the internet, but there is simply too much of this stuff on the net for there to be any truth to this. And clearly at least some of their dealers are willing to sell at lower margins. The process continues because the manufacturers want to move goods, yet would prefer not to honor warantees. Disgraceful!
