Anyone tried making their own NIS2 or similar?

Has anyone attempted to make their own NIS2 or similar mp3 player adapter? I have never seen anyone take the cover off the NIS2, but it looks like the installation is only 4 wires that connect to the factory headunit. Seems like it might be a simple operation...

Usually the less wires the more complex. I will most likely be looking into it.

Commands are transmitted using a serial link, to contruct an interface you need to reverse engineer:

* Physical layer, Serial layer, Protocol structure, Commands structure.

I'm not sure if there is serial communication on it or not. If there is, its not worth the time required for me to reverse engineer it. I'm pretty certain 4 of the wires are just standard line level outputs, but I'm not sure if the control lines are CAN lines or just simple enable lines. If I don't get text output on the radio, I don't care. If I can just throw an enable line and get it to work, fine with me!
