Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

The goals of my car audio system were to create a great sounding system without anyone knowing I did anything. The largest challenge I faced was to get good sound from the stock head unit. I know, I know… Get rid of the stock headunit you say, right? I wish it was that easy. It's like the Nissan engineers thought of was to torture us poor souls! Plus, I don’t want to change the appearance of the interior.

I recently picked up an AudioControl EQL equalizer and immediately noticed improved sound quality. This piece has been around for years, and has been used by professionals competing in SQ contests.

The AudioControl EQL accepts speaker level inputs from the stock headunit as well as line level inputs, it has a line-driver to boost the voltage of the signal going to the amp(s) (Only 2V, but better than stock) and has 13 bands of equalization for both stereo channels. LED indicators make it easy to set the gains correctly to lower the noise floor. This device allows you to get the most out of the stock headunit.

I set everything to neutral (0 gain) on the stock head unit and on the EQL. Immediately I could hear the music more clearly and with more headroom or dynamic range. I found it far more difficult to make further improvements by ear. I will pay to have a real professional use his tools to set it optimally.

If you want to keep your stock deck and want good sound I recommend you invest in one. I purchased mine off of eBay for <$100. Brand new will cost you ~$200.

very good find!...one question tho....did you hook it up to the stock speakers or to the aftermarket one? wonder if it would make as much difference to the stock set up?

What kind of setup do you have? I bought the AudioControl EQS off ebay a few months ago, but haven't but it in yet. I was wondering if I should buy speakers and an amp first.

Unfortunately I don't think EQL would help stock users as much as if you were planning on adding amps and better speakers.

The EQT is a higher end model of the EQL (30 vs 13 bands). How did you set yours? Did you use an RTA? I'm having difficulties setting mine by ear. Any tips?

I got the Salmon Grey and I placed it under the driver seat.

Take care,

tik1,
I would definately install the amps and new speakers at the same time you install your EQS (Nice piece by the way).

Are you going to install it yourself?

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

not sure what they use to set the EQTs, its one those handheld ones and use some kind of "pink nose"??? , use those way back in late 80's, i tried to change the setting myselfs once, cause i wanted lil more bass, boy did i screw it up, pretty much set everything backwards to way it should be, which is sppouse to be as flat as possible, i would suggest to get some pro's help to set it up the first time and leave it alone. of course i am not saying you dont know what you doing

as side note...my old car's door charm, that dinnng, dinnng...sound? have best responds curve form that handheld thingin....

ooh yeah, almost forgot, i had chromed shroud covering, with silk screening pink lettering to the EQTs to match two R/F's power 650s......ahhhhhhh...good old days.

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

I'm using the AudioControl EQT with my stock speakers until I've decided what front components to get. My stock components are powered by a JL Audio amp though and I did the 10uF cap upgrade. It sounds 100% different (better) from stock speakers powered by Bose amp. I too, got mine off of eBay for less than $100. I have the white finish. I had an RTA because I'm a pro sound guy running live sound and used that to get my flat curve. But I'd have to say I'm satisfied with how I got my stock speakers sounding.

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

did you paid 100 per? or for both? either way its good deal....wondering if the flat curve sound good on stockies? think most ppl who uses 1/3 octave EQ or any type of EQ's for that matter, are because want to take the peak and dip away, resulting form the aftermarket stuff they put in, that dont quite agree with each-other?....dont think stockies have too many peak or dip, if any at all (wasnt that's reasone the stock bose sux? not been bright enough and muddy mid-bass)

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

Ever since I dropped out of elementary school I've wanted AudioControl stuff. It's really well made. I've owned in-dash eqs from Alpine, Sony and Kenwood, but this piece gives you much more control. The trend nowadays is to go digital, but that stuff is expensive!

Hopefully I'll find some time to have it properly tuned next month.

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

Would it be possible to hook an equalizer up to the bose amp. Don’t most equalizers give line level outputs and doesn’t the bose amp need speaker level outputs just wondering if it would be possible.

Re: Want to keep your stock deck? Get this.

looks like a pretty cool audio mod. however, the only downside (at least to me) would be that you couldnt' control it while driving and listening to music unless you set it up in the front cabin area. and from the pic, it looks like it's supposed to go in the trunk next to the amp.

Z2G,
That is true. With a digital EQ such as the AudioControl DQT (~$400) and the Digital Dash Control (DDC) (~$200) you could make changes on the fly. Not very affordable, but it is posible nevertheless.
