Part to give warning when car is about to die?
Part to give warning when car is about to die?
I saw on the double headrest tv's post that that guy has something that sets off an alarm when he needs to turn on his car so that it doesnt die. I am thinking of getting an avn2454 soon and was wondering how much i could get a feature like this for. My car died once in this girls driveway when i was waiting on her to get dressed for like 15 minutes listening to my sterio with airconditioning on full blast and my auto headlights on.... i was able to get it started after giving it some gas eventually but i was close to having to jump my G after like a week of having it
I was just wondering how mucht his would cost and what i would need. I would obviously be getting a professional install done at an authorized eclipse dealer (somewhere in houston.... i posted on houston-imports.com asking for a dealer).... If i get it all installed i'll be able to check myself out of school soon when i turn 18, go to the parking lot and sit there watching porno when i get bored in class... and not worrying about my car dieing haha. (that was KIND of a joke... my sister used to check herself out tho and go sleep in her is300 or if she had a paper due)..... im really getting it for the nav and mp3 player, and for the "coolness" factor..... but help me out here. (btw i want everything look like its semi-factory... thats why im getting the avn in the first place.. because it doesnt look incredibly aftermarket with blue leds and a screen sticking out of a headunit look. So whatever part i would need i would want a steathy install either in the glove box or in the cubby hole i guess (probbaly would like it in the top glove box where factory nav would go if i had it.

Re: Part to give warning when car is about to die?
You can tell when your battery is dying when your voltage drops below a certain level.
You could probably do this with a 12v relay, a capacitor, and some resistors. The 12 volt relay will have a voltage range that it will work in if the voltage drops below a certain range, it will be closed and you can have the alarm be set by this, the capacitor would help gaurd against instantaneous voltage drops, like on crank and resistors could be used to adjust the drop out voltage of the relay.
However, you really shouldn't do something like this unless you get a deep cycle battery. You really don't want to drain your battery if you don't have to, it will significantly degrade the life of it. Normal batteries are made to supply a lot of power in a real short time, but are not meant to be completly drained and recharged, which deep cycle batteries are.
Your real solution is to just keep your car on when your waiting for someone. The gas you waste will cost far less then the cost of implementing something like this on your car.

I like to add that using your AC without the engine on will kill your AC compressor. And since you drained your battery as well as putting unnecessary strain on your altenator.

your best bet then is to get a second battery directly hooked up to your aftermarket headunit. (trunk mounted)

How does it kill the AC compressor? If the engine's not running, the AC compressor isn't running, either. The AC compressor must be able to wistand having the key in the "ON" position with the car off since it's that way for a short period of time every time you start the car. And I can't imagine why running the blower would affect the "idle" AC compressor one way or the other.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to refute your claim, just wanting to understand why that would be.
